Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'big' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'big' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend pde in a forum :-)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It takes courage to recommend a PDE in a forum :-) but...

Even the test driver on the Porsche website driving the GT3 needs some practice.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Which headers, exhaust and clutch assembly is best for a modest gain in HP without making the car to loud? What else can be done to increase HP? Is there a cold air intake anyone would recommend as well?
Thanks!
Scott
It seems that the general consensus is that short of a super charger, nothing will give you significant gains on the M96 motor.
A PDE maybe your best bet.
Short of forced induction, there are no real power gains to be had. Take a look at this thread...

Not much can be done to our engines. On the other hand, if you want to make your car as fast as the Grand Am Cup cars on the track, you will need to look into suspension, wheels, tires and then lightening it up a bit. If you are looking for more straight-line speed and do not want to go with a power-adder (ie: Turbocharger, supercharger, etc.) I'm afraid you are out of luck for any serious gains. Exhaust/Headers/Mass Air Flow will only add a few HP. Nothing worth bragging about though
Scott, you're going to spend allot of money of allot disappointment if you think that slapping on a chip, intake, and exhaust will improve the performance of the 996 engine. You'll get a different sound, a lighter wallet, a few stories to tell at the bar. You're seat of the pants dyno might even feel a difference, but you are wasting your money. The 996 motor is very efficient in stock form. Porsche left very little on the table. Using the X-51 option as a bench mark, Porsche makes "only" 25 high rpm hp with their kit. I don't see many folks capable or willing to spend the money to open up the 996 motor for better performance. You might as well buy a supercharger of if you have the cash buy a GT3 motor and tranny. It's a buyer beware market out their with many unsubstantiated power gains. Don't believe someone just because they show you a dyno sheet! Spend you money on driving instruction, i.e. PDE and you will be able to wring out the most performance from your already highly capable vehicle.
For going faster, perhaps the best investment to be made is in taking a driving course. Everyone I've spoken to has said that this is the best investment they've made.

There is company called EVO Motor Sports that supercharges 996s for about $11k installed.

Many people have done it and love it.
Hi there, been reading your posts with great interest. I own a 3.6 Turbo, which is an awsome car with mind blowing power and character. I guess the mileage is relatively low (53k miles), but recently, I've been getting a lot of bills here and there which are beginning to mount up...
The other day, while I was waiting for my car to be fixed, I test drove a 2003 996 Carrera (manual, 19' allows, Gemballa aero kit, ruf spoiler!, ruf steering wheel, arctic silver, black inside with aluminium here and there, Just gorgeous). I loved it and i'm now seriously thinking of selling my beloved 3.6 (380bhp approx.) to replace it with the car I drove.
The only draw back is that I felt the 996 was a bit under powered (I said a bit) - yes, I know, it's all relative... If everyhting works out, I will buy this beauty but would really like a hike in power. It looks to me like the only real answer is super charging, which leads me to the following:
1. Will super charging increase throttle response?
2. Will the power delivery be similar a standard 996 Carrera engine, i.e. is there power higher up or lower downthe RPM range? Any lag? What about torque?
3. Are there any super charger upgrades that will give a modest output (about 50bhp) and modest bill?
4. Any possible damage to the engine in the long term, if so any advice?
I'm new to the Carrera world so any advice would be greatly appreciate and please forgive any silly or obvious questions.
Many thanks & kind regards,
Ziad
Ziad - there is another thread for the SC (you probably saw already) where you might get a better response. I have read and talked with a local shop on SCs - if you really want the punch thats the only way. Since these are fairly new to the water cooled 996s - I am not sure I would do it to a 2003 and wipe out the warrantee. But for my 99.... maybe
good luck!!
I have the EVO SC and can answer your performance questions but only have 600 m so I cannot answer your long term questions yet. There is no lag, and I do know lag as in my 500 hp 3000gt with 22lb of boost.(son's). The warrenty issue is big. I almost did the 996 turbo swap for my C4S twice but liked the looks and price of what I have now better, and so far so good. Will
