Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Take a look at this article. I don't think it really affects most of us since it is largely due to the introduction of the Cayenne. But it still makes you go HMMMM... http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/040428/autos_quality_3.html E

It would be interesting to see what the numbers would be without the Cayenne. Also I don't like these survey results when they don't tell you what a "problem" is. For example a couple of years ago I read that Hummer and Mini were the worst when it came to problems. Upon further reading of the article you discover that poor gas mileage and wind noise were what caused the complaints about the Hummer and the people complained the Mini was too small and too darty. Come on people what do you expect when you buy a Hummer and Mini? Without these complaints both vehicle manufacturers would have ranked in the upper middle of the pack. So I wonder what is considered a problem in the JD power survey?

Here's an excerpt from an MSNC article: "Volkswagen and Porsche also ranked poorly in the study, although the Porsche 911 still ranked as the top premium sports car, ahead of the Honda S2000 and Nissan 350Z. Porsche was hurt by its introduction of the Cayenne sport-utility vehicle. Carmakers often encounter initial quality "bugs" in new models." POST 5Original post

The service manager at my dealership confirmed that they had experienced more problems involving the Cayanne, compounded by the fact they really didn't know how to fix them. I was told it was more electrical, warning lights, and automatic window/locking issues rather than driveline or suspension. My last 3 Porsches were flawless on delivery, and pretty much stayed that way, so the previous Powers results parallelled my experience. This was during the same interval that I owned 2 Eclass MB's, a new 850CSI BMW, and a sequence of Toyota Landcruisers. Only the Toyotas were as good as the Porsches. My friends with BMW's have had numerous problems (as had I), and MB post-1995 seems to have sunk to historic GM levels, while our 01 Denali was perfect. AS

POST 6Original post

I think these types of surveys and reports are statistically questionable. Volume of vehicles sold, number of people surveyed, and the fact that they count minor complaints like loose trim the same as a blown motor make the results not that useful. The results are tabulated on complaints per 100 vehicles but in some cases they survey less than 100 owners of a certain model. Then, like in Porsche's case, the problems with the Cayenne overly weight down the other models. And, people who buy a premium car have higher expectations of quality and therefore tend to complain about items that would be accepted in less expensive brands. Hyundai owners are probably happy if the car just starts everyday. Keep in mind this survey is based on owner experience after only 90 days. It is not a reflection of real long term quality or satisfaction. here is a link to another article. Car quality

POST 7Original post

The three year benchmark is what I'm concerned with now that I'm in my first Porsche. It's good to see that the 911 in general is a reliable car. One could get a bit paranoid about things by reading owner problems on the various Porsche BBS. Perfect example of sample bias in making a conclusion.

POST 8Original post

As for the long term study...it too is somewhat questionable when you consider the amount of miles on the average Honda Accord after 3 years and the average number of miles on a Porsche. Most likely the Porsche is going to have significantly less miles and less of a chance of problem appearing. Also it is interesting that Honda is still ranked so highly. There is alot of talk in the Honda ranks about subpar reliability in the newer Honda's. In fact Honda, much like MB, has come out publicly and said they are refocusing on quality and reliability.
