in my opinion the only useful chip or "piggyback" ecu as they are called is the kind that is installed along with a dyno tune.
Leading evidence: 'Install along' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install along' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It seemed to open it up further than the free flow filter that I installed first.

Some people run with the stock screen in place (extra protection from large debris), while others run with the OEM filter.

Suggestion
Wondering if anyone has used "other" Porsche DME settings to accomodate the higher flows.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My friends and I have tried racing each other before and after (identical cars with same bodies, wheels etc...) and in every gear there seems to be little to no difference even at wot.
Any real difference? Did it screw up the idle or starting up the car when cold (or hot). Did anything as far as adjustments to the ECU or re-mapping need to be done.
And, did you also install the BMC filter with the cold air kit?
Thanks a ton
I installed it ( with BMC) last August, its awesome, better lower end torque and sound, engine is much happier especially in low speed city driving. Fabspeed is great to deal with !
Also got teh maxflo exhaust for the car at same time...wow, great stuff
I install one a few weeks ago but kept the stock filter. I have had NO problems and the cars seems to idle just fine. The sound coupled with the PSE is perfect.
SYMA,
For the least restrictive intake, install the kit with the BMC filter and remove the stock black plastic screen in front of the MAF sensor. Some people run with the stock screen in place (extra protection from large debris), while others run with the OEM filter.
I have tracked this kit combined with a sport exhaust several times. Induction noise is markedly improved and the howl at high rpm is better. However, if you don't have a sport exhaust, I'd do that first before dealing with the intake.
No idle or CEL issues here. Low end throttle response is subjectively improved... the car's responsiveness feels quicker, but at higher speeds it's really tough to tell if there's any difference.
A couple of tips:
1. The little black ring included in the kit: forget it. Don't use it.
2. Don't over oil your BMC... you may want to spring for an extra BMC to keep swapping back and forth. That way, after you clean one, it can sit and have plenty of time for all the excess oil to come off, and then you can store it away until it's time to change again.
You'll love the sound change, but you'll also lose a little of that off-throttle burble due to loss of the stock resonator/silencer box.
Put Fabspeed cold air (BMC), headers and exhaust on '99 cab. Wondering if anyone has used "other" Porsche DME settings to accomodate the higher flows. I have heard there are resident programs/maps in all DMEs that might be used to better use these bolt on mods. These maps may be for higher altitudes, country specs (ROW), fuel...
I am considering this instead of the after market "chip" approach to smooth the power curve (I don't expect big HP gains). Anyone experimant with this approach? Thanks!
i can tell you that i am an advocate against buying aftermarket chips that are "tuned" to produce certain amounts of power. in my opinion the only useful chip or "piggyback" ecu as they are called is the kind that is installed along with a dyno tune. each engine is different no matter what the factory tolerances, buying a chip and not paying to get it tuned is wasted money. you might see a few hp diff but beyond that i find it hard to believe - in addition if you plan to get intakes/exhaust you'd have to get your chip tuned to that as well. that is where you will see bigger hp gains.
Guys, I do not have a PSE or aftermarket exhaust. Just the regular old Porsche mufflers.
Question now is WILL I notice any sound difference or performance by simply installing Fabspeed cold air kit??
Thanks
Sorry - can't answer that. I did the exhaust first. Obviously there was a very noticable sound increase (which made it difficult to tell when I added the cold air) - powere curve became more "peaky"
I think its bad - power has some flat spots on the curve (I think its noticable - but its not severe). This is why I was thinking of having the DME mapped to a different program. This is also why some have there DMEs "chipped". I also want to make sure I get all I can out of this 3.4 (without going too $$ crazy)
Yes and I liked it. Seemed to make it touch quicker according to the G Tech. a Bit steeper on the acceleration curve. Nothing big or huge though. The sound is also very nice. Lets out a wail at 5k RPMS.
SYMA, your 3.6 is
begging
for a sport exhaust!
I think you'll be much more pleased with the sound difference from a quality sport exhaust with stock intake versus the stock exhaust and modified intake.
Doug is right. The combination of intake mod + sport exhaust really lets out a racy howl above 5K. My Fabspeed setup has been terrific, but you may also want to look at PSE.
I think the exhaust takes away a few horses (because of loss of back pressure) and the intake sounds nice. Don't really know about power gains though. My friends and I have tried racing each other before and after (identical cars with same bodies, wheels etc...) and in every gear there seems to be little to no difference even at wot. either way, the sound is much better...
Sorry to rob the thread, but has anyone else had problems with Fabspeed? I left an exhaust there in January for them to check out so they could protoype using it as a template, and I have been calling for the passed month to get it back but all I get is someone there telling me that I will get a call back.
again sorry to rob the thread.
Having the Fabspeed cold air/equal length headers/exhaust did improve high rev performance (this is what I called "peaky"). I think the low end suffered a little (maybe this is the back pressure issue mentioned elswhere). I have been looking for "chipping" or DME re-mapping info to optimize the "power curve". So far I have found very mixed opinions on this - I guess the thing to do is find a place that can actually do the DME "tuning", which requires leaving the car
- and additional $$$ I'm sure
