I stil need to replace the inner O rings for that however I will elect to do that myself when I install a set of headers (after my giac ecu of course).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys A bit ago there was a topic I chimed in on reguarding the heaviness of the clutch on 996er's specifically my 99 996. Well, I just had the clutch replaced and all I can say is wow! It now takes the same effort as the boxter loaner I had previously! Also upon my service manager letting me check out the "wasted" clutch, I found it was almost about to eat the flywheel with the rivits! In addition the pressure plate had hot spots all around it. The most distrurbing and odd thing about it however, was that the wear on the clutch disc was very uneven and in strange areas. BTW my RMS was not leaking but it was replaced as a precautionary step, why now with a 2 yr warranty. If it fails what more than 3x new engine? j/k who knows. also the seal on the intermediate shaft on my tranny needed to be replaces as well as the seal for the cam actuator. I stil need to replace the inner O rings for that however I will elect to do that myself when I install a set of headers (after my giac ecu of course).

POST 2Original post

sounds good, did you consider doing a billet flywheel at all, many have said thats a worthwhile upgrade at the time of a clutch install, is this an OE clutch or did you go aftermarket?

POST 3Original post

How many miles did you get out of that clutch on your '99?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was actually going to, however after hearing the "gear noise" that was a byproduct of the installation when the clutch was out, I elected not to. The noise was a pretty annoying chatter that I heard on Ben's car, and as my car is my daily driver I think it would have driven me crazy. I had 40k on the original clutch. The effort required to push it in went to heavy at about 32k.

POST 5Original post

sounds to me like the lighter flywheels transmit a throw out bearing noise more so then the stock ones.... this is just from my experiance with other vehicles, however i could see it being anoying, i just can't get over the fact of saving 12lbs in rotational weight tho!!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's not the throw out bearing but the actual "gear noise" of the transmission, because the aluminum flywheel acts as an amplifier, amplifying the sound, whereas the old flywheel was more of an insulator. That was what I was told by the chief engineer of Fidanza. They have simular problems with the torque tube noise on corvettes-

POST 7Original post

My clutch is feeling really heavy lately (and requires some serious slippage to get the car moving). I'm finally (and hopefully) getting the lightweight flywheel installed sometime soon and will try to get a sound clip for everyone.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

have fun you will hate the noise but love the performance. ask Ben in LJ-

POST 9Original post

How much does a new clutch cost with installation?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got my clutch at a deal because another dealer bought 1 too many. I got the oem one in the porsche box for 360. My service guy is pretty cool and gave me a discounted install rate of 550- for the install.

POST 11Original post

So if I get a new clutch installed at a Porsche dealership, am I looking at spending about $900?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

you didn't follow what I wrote at all. I got a deal on the clutch as well as the labor reduced. You can expect to pay probably about 1500-2k total.

POST 13Original post

Yikes! Okay, thanks for the warning. I have about 63,000 miles on my original clutch. I guess I can expect to replace it fairly soon.
