If you think it's too noisy, maybe check the tires closely to make sure it doesn't have poor wear on the inner edges.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking for a '99 or '00 996 with under 35k miles. I found one close to my home(NJ) this weekend and went and drove it. The cars exterior was near flawless and the interior was 9/10. The experience driving it was ok, there was LOTS of road noise from the conti sportcontacts and it didn't seem all that quick. Now, upon inspection of the maintenence records I see the car had the engine replaced at 6,000 miles. It stated there was engine failure with white smoke out of the exhausts and coolant was found in cylinder#3. Also, the car was an early production '99 run. The seller(2nd owner) seems very honest but he wants $40k for the car, it has 26k miles on it. Is an engine replacement a positive thing with regards to less miles on the engine than the chassis or is it long term more worrrying? I'm thinking of offering the seller $35k because it is in good shape but I'm not sure if it would be taking a large risk. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

It's a new engine so don't worry about it. Make sure there are no other issues with the mechanical by having a PPI performed. If you can't shake your doubts about this car then be patient and you'll be able to find the right car for you.

POST 3Original post

In Oregon $40k for a car with 26,000 miles would be a very good buy.

POST 4Original post

Just some quick notes to give you a comparison point.... I am in Tampa Bay area and bought a late 99 in Jan/2004. South Florida in particular has tons of these at reasonable prices. Mine had 35,300 miles and I paid $36,500. The car was a 2 owner (first owner only had it 4 months). Exterior was excellent, overall the car had good maintenance records, etc. The interior was average (scuffs on hood and engine lever, minor scuff on passenger side dash). The car was very lightly optioned and only really had the Hi-Fi system and auto-dimming mirrors as major options. It's a 6 speed. I felt it was an 'average' deal (i.e. not particularly inexpensive and if I had kept searching I could certainly have done better) but I liked the color (mirage metallic which I haven't seen before or since) and I really needed/wanted a car after going without one for 2 months. Also this may be of interest to you...mine had the contisports on it as well. They were noisy as hell....in fact it was so bad that I thought a wheel bearing was going out. After our first 2 hour trip I felt tone-deaf and beaten up...not good. When the shop put it up on a lift they found that the left rear had deep tread on the outside but the inner edge was so worn that the steel belts were showing. (yikes) With that occurrence I put a new pair of Michelin Pilotsports on the car and it is MUCH quieter. Total transformation from before. That said it's not a Lexus and doesn't sound like one. If you think it's too noisy, maybe check the tires closely to make sure it doesn't have poor wear on the inner edges. Good luck with it! Keith

POST 5Original post

Engine replacement should be a big issue. I replaced Conti's with SO3's and thought the roda noise went away. I would go to a delaer and try to see if you can drive a comparable car as a point of reference. PPI would be a must as well. Price wise I think you are in a ballpark.

POST 6Original post

Price shopping on autotrader my gut told me that Florida and Texas were some of the cheapest places to find Porsches. Why not do a search using a Florida zip code ? Talk to the sellers and when you have a good list of cars to look at fly/drive down to FLA. and look at cars ? I bought another LS 400 in March when we were in Palm Springs on vacation because they are plentiful and cheap down there. Second time I've brought a good used LS 400 while I was on vacation in P.S. .

POST 7Original post

Alex, you've got to be totally comfortable with your purchase. Time is on your side and it is a buyers' market. Autotrader, PCA, Rennlist, and the Porsche Market Letter are some sources. I'd buy the newest car that fits your budget. I'd also sit down and make a list of colors and options that you consider essential. The rest is icing on the cake. A PPI is a must as is documentation of regular maintenance.
