Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Also I am looking to purchase a winter beater car / used / AWD / sporty / decent luggage space for about 20,000 - 25,000.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hopefully people won't get annoyed by another seemingly 2WD vs. 4WD thread. My question is since when do the C2 and C4S post the same 0-60 times? I know that the 4's have better traction that make up for the weight, but in early 911 literatues, they state 5.0 for the 2's and 5.5 for the 4's, manual of course. When did this change and how/why?
Also I am looking to purchase a winter beater car / used / AWD / sporty / decent luggage space for about 20,000 - 25,000. Any recommendations?
TIA
Don't think of them as a beater, but after owning my 964, I am really hooked on this model. You could easily find a 964 C4 in your price range, but luggage space is questionable unless you do without rear seats.
Dunno about the 0-60 times, but lets face it, those times are a professional driver trying to get the most out of the car.
About that beater....I would look at a mid-90s Audi S6 sedan or wagon. Awd, 285 hp, 5 spd, pretty sporty, pretty much came loaded. They are about 22k.
That would be my first choice (German engineering being what it is) but, an older Subie WRX, an Audi A4 (not as sporty as the older S6), if sporty is not too much of a concern '98 E320 4Matic Wagon, lots of space, merc reliability, awd.
I went the "winter beater" route also. I bought an Evo VIII and equipped it with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22's on light SSR Comp's (Tire Rack).
It's a new car and it's chipped and sandblasted as hell, but this thing is awesome in the snow, and performs somewhere between a Boxster and a C4S on dry roads. I only wish it had heated seats (but the stock Recaro's are fantastic) and an external temp display, ala Audi.
A used one with very low miles will set you back ~$25K.
Good Luck,

I thought we were all "professional drivers."
I was just wondering if the AWD silicon clutch had been drastically improved...
Thanks for all the input. I was thinking more along the lines of A4 or A6. Maybe even the S4 of RS6 if I can find an example that fits my budget.
Actually saw a 928 S4 today on the road. Wow that car was beautiful. How are those in the snow?
WOW, people's idea of a beater differs greatly. The RS6 is one kick *** ride, but due to the limited number they are importing, and that they only came out a year ago, they are still up in the 60-70k level. An S4, from about 5 years ago on the other hand, would be more in the 25k range, and with a little chipping you can really turn it into a screamer. Even a newer S6 is nothing to shake stick at, and with a little modding can put smile on your face. But if you want to use them as your winter car, put winter tires on it, cause the sport rubber they come with sux in the snow.
Most cars won't suck in the snow if you put the right tires on them, a 928 should be no different. After all, 15 - 20 yrs ago, most cars were front engine rear wheel drive, it snowed more often, and people still managed to get around. Its all about the snow tires.

Coupe 5.0
4S 5.1
Cab 5.2
Here's what I got after just a few in 3.4L C4 Cab and I'm hardly a pro driver.
For a winter car I'd go w/an Audi.
