This is not a probability of success.

I've got a 95 model 993 and felt it was the best choice because of lower depreciation, less possibility of the dreaded "Check Engine Light", carbon build up issues, and definitely a great improvement over the 986 version.

Suggestion
I'd try for a 2002 or later model - we test drove a 300 HP Carrera but ordered a 2002 (320 HP) and the car seems a little stronger than we remember the tester being.
Leading evidence: 'best choice' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best choice' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Test drove a 300 hp carrera' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Which Model year is the earliest 996 that is less prone to problems.
I've got a 95 model 993 and felt it was the best choice because of lower depreciation, less possibility of the dreaded "Check Engine Light", carbon build up issues, and definitely a great improvement over the 986 version. I'm contemplating moving to the newer bodied cars like a 986S or a 996 coupe. Are the later model year 996 less prone to RMS leaks ? Should I stay away from a 1999 or 2000 car ? Why ? I'm happy enough with the 1995 speed and a standard 996 is probably fast enough. I am concerned that the 986 models can be orphaned somewhat like the 944, 928 and so on. Reccommendations ?
I would just look for the best deal on a low-mileage car that has the most of what you want. An aftermarket warranty will cost less than $3K, and cover any problems that might arise (e.g., RMS). I looked for the color and body I wanted, and found one with an interior that I really liked (though I did have to get the row M030 later). Good luck!
My 99 996 coupe is sweet with 35k. From what I've seen online, RMS problems are random and aren't necessarily associated with the earlier models. Good luck - hope you find a nice one!
I believe Porsche are now offering "Certified" cars, this certification should take care of the dreaded RMS issue (potential issue) you might come across. Take your time looking as there are a lot of cars out there to choose from and make sure to have the PPI performed by a qualified technician.
Improvements were made both to the RMS itself and to the block, if I remember correctly from previous posts. Regardless, it is still a good axiom to buy the newest model you can afford. There were improvements to the 996 each year. 2002, for example, saw the bigger engine and higher HP and torque, as well as the Variocam Plus version of the Variocam. The biggest depreciation hits are taken in the first 2 years, then it tapers off a bit. Good luck!
As always, the newest Porsche, with what you want, you can afford. When balancing options with year built, I tend to let the options drop off as I near the newer model.
Mileage is crucial.
Concur with Palting and Davidmichael. I'd try for a 2002 or later model - we test drove a 300 HP Carrera but ordered a 2002 (320 HP) and the car seems a little stronger than we remember the tester being. The standard 2002 exhaust sounds better than the earlier ones also......
Get the latest and best 996 that you can afford. They are all just as prone to the same RMS problem. The 99's probably would be the most trouble prone, but at this time any issues probably would have surfaced by now. That being said, I had a 2/98 build 996 C2 that was pretty trouble free... no fluid leaks at any time.
