Jeff in particular noted that we used a minimum number of basic tools which should lay to rest some of the claims that the 996 is difficult to DIY.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The first is discussed here:

That was a year ago on my first 996 and it was unpleasant. This time around with my new 996 I had the benefit of both experience and access to my buddy's floor hoist setup, and of course his head, which was in the game too. This time around the job was downright enjoyable.
In the pictures you can see the car on the lift, and the floor jack supporting the engine which we dropped about two inches. Getting the bottle in and out wasn't easy exactly, but it wasn't all that hard either and we had the job done in 2 hours which included a couple of beers, some pizza, some p-car yakking. The new and old bottles are lying on the concrete behind the car there. Notice how yellow the old one is. If yours looks like this then prepare to have it start leaking soon.
Jeff in particular noted that we used a minimum number of basic tools which should lay to rest some of the claims that the 996 is difficult to DIY. This car is a dream to work on.
The only notes from this job which the future searcher may be interested in and which I don't think I covered in my other posts was that we syphoned the contents of the old coolant tank into a empty 4 litre window washer fluid jug. The coolant was clean (although I can tell you it tastes bloody awful) so we poured it right back into the new tank when the job was done. After that I drove home with the pressure relief valve (that black cap with the spring clip on top) open to purge out any air pockets, and that's it done. EZ Peezy
Here's the snaps:
Well it doesn't
look
like fun, but if you say so...good job!
I'd like details on that lift. Can you ask your friend what kind it is and how much it cost?
The lift is cool. I know it cost him $2700, and I know there;s an external hydraulic power pack. It's a kind of scissor arrangement. I'll try to find out more.
