Suggestion

The cars in question spent years IIRC stored in government warehouse until a law finally passed that allowed the owners of these cars limited use on public streets, to the tune of 2500 miles per year, after spending a small fortune to have cas mod'd to bring up to emissions compliance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there anything I should be aware of when purchasing an imported Euro 996 in the states. Licensing, resale etc? Thanks

POST 2Original post

I assume you're talking about a car from Europe and not Canada. I don't know what the rules are in the USA, but in Canada we can *not* import European spec cars unless they are 15 or more years older. Full stop, no exceptions.

POST 3Original post

Here are the rules on importing cars from the NHTSA web site. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ Looks like it can easily be done, but you'll have to jump through a fair amount of red tape. Basically, for permanent import you'll either have to certify that the car meets US specs before shipping, or you will have to bring it up to spec before it can be registered - pretty standard for taking a car into any country.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I should have been more clear. The previous owner imported the car from Europe and it's now being sold by a dealer in VA. Anything I should consider like resale, ie less desireable than an original US car. Differences in performance vs original US car etc. It's a 2003 C4 Cab. Thanks

As long as the car has been certified as being legal to register over here then you should be okay. To be honest the US Spec cars are dumbed down versions of the Euro spec cars and some people spend a lot of time and money to take a US spec car to Euro spec. If the price is right and it passes PPI, then you'll have a nice car without the hassles of having to do all the mods.

POST 6Original post

Do European cars have catalytic perverters.... uhm... converters?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 6611229

Yup, but it's worth checking that they have to hit the same emissions standards. It sounds like this car has been previously registered over here, so I'm betting that is also not an issue.

paperwork. License and registration and insurance must be current. Cars sold in USA are required to meet federal emissions requirements or state requirements (if state emisisons requirements stricter) and federal crash test requirements. The car may fall under crash test certification done by Porsche for the Carrera model line. If not you'll have to supply example cars to be crash tested. There were more than a few buyers of 959's that learned the hard way what happens when one tries to import cars not crash test certified and not emissions compliant. The cars in question spent years IIRC stored in government warehouse until a law finally passed that allowed the owners of these cars limited use on public streets, to the tune of 2500 miles per year, after spending a small fortune to have cas mod'd to bring up to emissions compliance. Given the number of USA 996s available with no questions concerning their emissions and crash test compliance why you'd want a Euro spec'd car is beyond me. USA and European cars nowadays are basically the same with no major differences. Minor differences like absence of engine start clutch interlock are all that exist. (Used to be European models had more power but this has changed now and the difference in power due to higher octane gas available to European drivers.) Sincerely, Macster.
