Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I use Blizzak LM-22's which work fine although there seems to be a bias now toward the Dunlop's.
Leading evidence: 'Use blizzak lm-22's' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check owners manual' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have an 01 C2 and have been running Boxster 17" rims on my car each winter without problem.

Seems to be running okay, it's just kind of wimpy looking.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought a set of new 17" factory twist rims and Dunlop snow tires from a Porsche dealer off Ebay. They were advertised as being for the Boxster or Boxster S, but the parts guy said they would fit my 99 996. The price was great -- $1325 -- and they arrived in the same box they shipped from in Germany, but I'm curious if they are the correct rims for my car; they seem to sit a little bit inside the fenders, definitely more so than my 18" rims did. Or does the 996 need spacers for the 17-inch rims?

I've been told that the factory snow tire package has narrower rears for better traction, which explains the gap. Still not sure if the snow package for the 996 is the same as the Boxster though.

Nope. The Boxster rears are 8.5" x 17" ET50 while the 996's is a 9" x 17" RT55. Porsche does not specify the 8.5" wheel for the 996 for either summer or winter tires.
Seems to be running okay, it's just kind of wimpy looking. Then again, I'm less likely to scrape it on a curb or something. Thanks, Viken.

Vic,
Check your owners manual. Viken is correct that Porsche specifies 9" x 17" RT55 for the 996. However, my owners manual also specifies the 8.5" x 17" ET50 as an alternative on the 996 when using snow tires. I have an 01 C2 and have been running Boxster 17" rims on my car each winter without problem.

Snow tires are supposed to be skinnier becasue it helps the tire push down into the snow and get a good bite. Think of snow shoes and how wide they are. They float on top of the snow. WIth snow tires you want a firm grip on the road by packing the snow down and into the tire lugs. My C4 snows are 265 in the rear and although they look small, they work great. Chicago got hit a few days ago and I was flying around my neighborhood trying them out. My neighbor, with his Qx4 was stunned to see me.

Thanks, guys ...
Jim, do you run a spacer with your 17s? Or do you just let them hang inside the wheel well? The manual mentions removing any spacers when using the spare tire.

I don't use spacers. I was told that I did not need to use spacers. btw, I went to the 8.5" x 17" ET50 wheels so that I could use the 225/45 R 17" tires. I wanted the narrowest snow tires that I could get for the reasons that Chitownbob mentioned. No problem in the recent BOston snow. I use Blizzak LM-22's which work fine although there seems to be a bias now toward the Dunlop's. I also bought my wheels on eBay w/o a problem.
