It was graphite grey and in fine condition but the dealer replaced under warranty b/c of a faulty "flap" on the side and said the whole piece comes as one piece and agreed to change it to black.

They sell the canvas and window for $1k (used of course).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My CAB top has faded pretty bad so that it does not match the interior anymore. It looks Khaki and in the interior is graphite grey (as the top used to be). LOOKS HORRIBLE WHEN IT IS DOWN. THE COLORS CLASH SO BAD! I am going to switch to a black top.
Has anybody replaced their top yet? Cost? I have a 2000 996 C2CAB So I will need to get the new rear window "burned" in. I have a feeling this will cost $$$$$$. Any experiences, suggestions?
Well I looked into changing my blue top to a black one and i was surprised to see, it wasnt as bad as i thought. Turns out it would be around $4000.00 to do a new one.............really my blue isnt all that bad
Paul
I did.
My '99 996 Cab rear window puckered while sitting in my parking lot. Dealer said they would get a new window. Tried that, but the zipper was broken on the canvas. New canvas.
Top is around $2100 retail
Window is around $730 retail
Add 10 hours labor.....close to 4K
I was really pissed as the car was 6 months out of factory warranty, never abused, in showroom condition, low mileage, well cared for, and PCNA would not do a thing. Pathetic.
Anyway, I had no choice at the time (rainy season). You might find aftermarket top companies, but they usually farm out the window to a Porsche dealer because of the contraption used to heat weld it in.
LVDell...
Go to 911pcar.com They are posrche dismantler in LA. They sell the canvas and window for $1k (used of course). No idea what the labor would be...
They have the whole assembly for 3500....
"Yes there is a product you just apply on the top, but the name eludes me at the moment."
I read about the Renovousa and Surflex products to re-dye the canvas top. Personally, I have no personal experience with either product. But if anyone does be interested in results.

Only problem with the Renovo is that it is a black dye (which I want) but the company said ti is for ONLY black faded tops. NOT TO BE USED ON NON-BLACK TOPS. Darn! Maybe a used black top. I will call the dealer and ask what I need to buy to replace just the canvas (and call the 911pcar people. Thanks for the tip.
I'd continue to research the dye route. A dye may not be able to get you to black, but it should very certainly counter the effects of the sun fade and get you near to the origional color which you must have liked at one point.
Find someone who dyes professionally (maybe a fabric or leather guy would have the experience to suggest some options) rather than rely on an autoparts store DIY product.
Thanks Scott, the dye route seemed the best route (and least $$$). I am past the point of no return though. I replaced the rear decklid (long piece behind the rear seats that goes all the way across and covers the rollbar protection and the bolt down for the hardtop. Replacement color? Black of course.
It was graphite grey and in fine condition but the dealer replaced under warranty b/c of a faulty "flap" on the side and said the whole piece comes as one piece and agreed to change it to black. It just looked so bad with the top khaki looking butting up to a graphite grey rear decklid.
I asked the dealer about top replacement under warranty and he said they used to for faded tops but PCNA came down on them hard and now they will not do it. My gripe is shouldn't the color have held? If I was PCNA king for a day I would replace it
