Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If I check the dipstick (hot) it is also mid-level.
Leading evidence: 'Check dipstick (hot) it is also mid-level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dipstick (hot) it is also mid-level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
all the oil is circulating in the engine so how are you going to check the level?

and you always should wait at least 10-15 minutes after shutting off the car before you check the oil level so that the oil in the engine has a chance to drain back into the pan.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have read some archived posts, but am still confused about when to add oil/how much to add - I get conflicting measures of the oil level.
- When I stop the car, after 15 minutes the oil gauge reads at minimum (hot). In the morning, the oil level is medium. If I check the dipstick (hot) it is also mid-level.
I know the hot reading should be used - which one do I trust?
Thanks
think of it this way, the whole bar system in the car is supposedly representing one quart of oil, 'according to my dealer', so if you checked it inside the car when it was hot and showed only 1 bar then it probly needs almost a quart, but i would add it slowly if at all
Winovin, You must have the engine Running!, up to standard temperature on a flat/level surface!
The interior guage is Ok for a quick AM check, but learn to read the dipstick.
And I'll add, never fill it to the top! If you push it hard and shut it down right after you might get a Big cloud of blue smoke upon restart. Let it cool down at idle for 3-4 minutes and you should be fine. At least that worked for me.
Good luck

Hmmm ... every 911 from the 993 back, the rule of thumb is check it with the engine running at operating temperature on level ground. What does the 996 manual say?

The 996 does not have the same dry sump oil system as did the 993 and earlier 911's. Those cars along with the current turbos and the GT3 measure their oil with the engine warmed up, idleing, and on level ground. With the current 996 Carreras turn off the engine on level ground and give it a few minutes for the oil to drain down to the pan. I used to take my measurement before starting.
I am confused - the indicator has 6 bars between the min and max levels. Sometimes after stopping, while hot, the engine will have 0 bars. (i.e. 1 bar showing, but below the minimum level). Today, after the car rested 1/2 hour, the temp had come down a bit, but now it showed 1 bar. From cold (overnight), it shows 4 bars.
sounds like your oil level is pretty much ok then winovin. if it rests overnight a bit more oil will drain from the engine into the pan so the reading will be a little bit higher. you could always add a few ounces to make it always read between the min/max levels no matter if the car is cold or hot if you want.
