The AWD system was changed for 2004 delivering 99% of the power to the front wheels in 2WD and then switching 50/50 front/rear when needed.

Suggestion
you are looking for a car to use as an awd on days that you don't want to use your cab (snow, going to a mall, nyc, etc) i think that you should buy the best awd that you can for the least amount of money, as this is not your everyday car.

Suggestion
sounds like a good plan-why pay a bunch of money for this kind of a second car, one that you will use only when you don't want to take the cab?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been thinking about the possibility of either winter tires or a different winter car. Being that my 996 cab is my only car right now it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get a second "more practical" car. I was thinking about leasing either a discovery or freelander - my current porsche dealer is also a land rover dealer. Anyone have any opinions?
Dr G.,
Don't get me wrong, I love Landies, but the freelander seems more like a re-badged Escape. The disco's are great, but for that price there is ALOT of good AWD vehicles out there. They start at 34k for the base model...you can get a Subaru, Audi A4, or even a Touareg for that. If the dealer has cert pre-owner Disco HSE or Range 4.6 (previous model) that would be worth it, but new, there is alot of competition out there.
But as Teflon said, a set of Dunlop M2s would be a helluva lot cheaper....
I just bought a Subaru WRX-wagon after looking at all sorts of things including the Touareg and the Allroad (Audi). I'd bet it'll haul more stuff than the Landie, and it's a blast to drive. Truly an amazing handler out of the box. Also, if you can bear the image and want a little more room, check out the Forester XT (turbo). It has a de-boosted WRX STI engine (the 2.5 turbo), and it's a hoot.
hi dr. g. i presently have a freelander, and have driven it for the last 1 and 3/4 years. here is my take on this issue. i think alot of the respondents on this thread have made some excellent points. you are looking for a car to use as an awd on days that you don't want to use your cab (snow, going to a mall, nyc, etc) i think that you should buy the best awd that you can for the least amount of money, as this is not your everyday car. i like my freelander, but i would not pay alot of money for it. about 2 months ago, the landrover factory started giving big discounts (about $4000) on 2003 freelanders in an attempt to move inventory. if you can lease/buy a freelander cheaply, i would recommend it, as it is a fine vehicle-it has given me 20,000 miles of excellent service, in an upscale vehicle. if not, i would probably look for an inexpensive deal on a subaru, as they are also great awd vehicles, that have a history of trouble free service. otherwise doc-have a happy holiday and enjoy that pretty cab.
If you're driving a Porsche, you'll love the fourth generation AUDI quattro. Especially if you get a nice premium variant like the allraod, S4 or S6 Avants.
I ended up picking up a 2004 Santa Fe LX for a good price - it's got a good rating, great warranty and looks decent. It will probably be a car I will keep for a while plus it's nice to have some decent cargo space. The AWD system was changed for 2004 delivering 99% of the power to the front wheels in 2WD and then switching 50/50 front/rear when needed.
Ford Explorer. Unless your badge-obsessed, it IS the best deal for the money. They are very roomy, reliable and reasonable to maintain. I have had one for a while now (used to have a Defender 90) and I love it!!!
Ford Escape! I actually had a Freelander (for @ 48 hours), but the Escape turned out to be the better choice for me (the fleet does now include a certain other SUV. No winter tires for it yet.... but there will be!!!!). I can bash the Escape around, parts & service are cheap, and it goes quite well!

my first car was an 88 cherokee with the straight 6 in it. with rear wheel drive you could spin the hell out of the tires in that thing!
and the 4 wheel drive in it was great.
Just got the new autoweek in and the cover story is the new BMW x3. Looks really good, gonna go check it out in January. It looks like it is priced about the same as the Landrover but is way more advanced with the xdrive system and 3 series engines.
Bob
My wife was pretty interested in the X3 until we started reading all of the reviews. They are pretty universally critical of the fit/finish and ride. Nearly all of them wonder "why" this car exists next to the X5, and also wonder why someone wouldn't go get a 325xi wagon.
what magazine said that Stiles? Autoweek gave it a very good review overall and even went so far as to say that this was more utilitarian than the X5 because it had more interior space.
Bobby
I just read my Autoweek, and it has the most positive review that I've read. CAR, Evo and Car and Driver were all fairly negative on the points I mentioned above.
