Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They said it was leaking but I know for a fact it wasn't as I had the previous day only just checked the oil and water.

If an RMS leak cannot be fixed because of a mismatch between the crankshaft and the engine, Porsche replaces the engine.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They won't gaurantee their work? It's only been a month? That doesn't sound right to me. Doesn't all work performed on your car waranty or not have some kind of 30-60-90 day gaurantee. I know I would be very upset if I had to pay to get something fixed and then 30days later it broke again and had to pay to fix it AGAIN! Who says if they fix it again it won't start to leak in another 30days?
it was like a year later, but only a month after the warranty ran out, but even still it seems since it was a reoccuringn problem, and one that shouldn't happen with so few miles regardless of years gone by that they should have fixed it, so instead i traded it in for a 03, which proptly had an rms leak
I wonder how many lawsuits have been filed over RMS leaks. Clearly this is an inherent flaw in the design of the engine which hasn't been fixed in several years. Ford and Bridgestone got sued for tires, although many lost their lives unfortunately. Although we don't know if anyone has died as a result of this problem, but having an engine blow out at high speed or having to stop on the side of the highway isn't safe either. Interesting that nothing has motivated Porsche to fix this problem for good. Lawsuits motivate big companies to improve upon/fix products for the benefit of the public. Clearly this hasn't happened yet.

I happened to be speaking with my dealer about the advisibility of getting an extended warranty for y '02 cab which is about to go off warranty. I mentioned the RMS problem (I had it at 15k mi. but it was repaired under warranty) and he said it cost about $800 to repair if not covered by warranty.
I had mine replaced out of warranty free of charge due to it being a known defect and speaking to the Porsche local rep. I did see the chargeback bill from the dealer to Porsche and it was $640.00 here in Pennsylvania. I often wonder if I had to pay the dealer would it have been the same cost????
Are you kidding me, only $800. I'll bet I've spent $800 in time reading just Scouser's endless posts about it.
I always assumed it had to be thousands $$ with the engine having to come out and all.
i believe it's $800 for the leak repair but if there is more freeplay than the tolerated amount (there's a tool that measures this - >4mm or something) you will need a new engine @ the tune of $8000.
If an RMS leak cannot be fixed because of a mismatch between the crankshaft and the engine, Porsche replaces the engine. Therefore, wouldn't a repair which required a new engine outside of the warranty period be a huge expense?
Due to an RMS leak I had in be c2 cab, the potential of having an RMS leak in my c4s, and the introduction of the 997 next year, I decided to sell my c4s today!
8 hours labour is what PUK told me. When I had my RMS done 6 weeks back they did it under their so called "good will" scheme which equated to me having to pay 215 toward the cost plus the cost of a new header which "they" bust, another 325. They said it was leaking but I know for a fact it wasn't as I had the previous day only just checked the oil and water. Now the RMS has gone again.....so it's back to the dealer I go for a 2nd RMS in two months.
Jeff 25: here's another endless post for ya. Obviously you have lots of cash
spare as even $800 of your precious wasted time is not much for you to be concerned about. Since youv'e got all that money and your verbal with it too, how about giving a measly $18 to rennlist for a membership fee. Then
at least it won't seem half as bad you butt'n in with your offensive comments.
Cause it is an $800 repair that is not guaranteed to fix anything and can go bad again at any time. $$$$ + Time + Frustration + not knowing when it will blow again = unhappy 996 owner. Its as simple as that.
ok guys... I know I've seen this before but can't remember where.... how do you know if you got an RMS leak... what are all the symptoms... where does the oil drop below the car?
thx
Hi Pete, main sign is small oli drops under the engine in the certer b/w Lf & Rt, under the stab bar more or less (between the engine and transmition), clutch may start slipping but not necesarily.
