And always I've said thank you and the tranny's fine after fluid replaced with fresh.

You will have to check your Vin# and then the trans # also.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, it turns out that the squeak I was hearing was coming from the transmission/transaxle, and there was an audible buzzing when the car was on the lift, with periodic snap, crackle, and pops. I told them to go ahead and drain the transmission oil and have a look, and sure enough, there are visible chunks of metal in the tranny oil. From what I gather, my transmission is toast. Has anyone else here replaced a transmission on a C4, with either a new or used tranny, or rebuilt a transaxle? The service manager made it sound like once the metal shavings have traveled through the whole of the transmission through the oil system, it's pretty much unrealistic to rebuild. Does anyone happen to have a good condition C4 transaxle lying around?
....AAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!!!......
Most shops don't have the tools and/or expertise to rebuild a transmission. It might not be cost effective to do so, especially compared to sourcing a used unit, but just because there are metal parts floating free doesn't mean it can't be rebuilt.
I'd get a second opinion about that.
How many miles? year? usage? oil changed? front diff ok?.... sorry to hear about this...
I changed my tranny fluid and it was dark brown... yet my front diff was still golden color. 1st change ever at 40K miles.
75,000 miles total, ~12,000 of mine, and never abused in my time owning it, I'm not sure about previous oil changes, but the PO was very meticulous, so I feel certain if it ever needed it it was done. Front diff was fine.
Would a rebuild be cost effective compared to replacing with a used unit? Aside from catastrophic problems, I understand that transmissions are relatively durable, correct? Any suggestions about good dismantlers/ used parts suppliers?
tranny/diff fluid at least in manual transmission equipped cars to have some metal debris, sometimes rather large pieces, come out with the oil, and especially at the 1st tranny fluid drain/refill.
More than once I've had a "mechanic" (never at Porsche dealership though) show me the metal debris and tell me I need a new or rebuilt (usually rebuilt) tranny.
And always I've said thank you and the tranny's fine after fluid replaced with fresh.
When I went in for fluid change though there were no symptoms transmission was operating fine, well pretty good considering in some cases the miles on the fluid, though.
If there were transmission problems before fluid drain the metal debris could very well be signs transmission's toast.
Sincerely,
Macster.
+1 for fill it up and try it.... its $100 worth of oil and could make a big differance. If nothing else you might be able to baby it till you find a replacement..
There was a pretty audible whirring noise with intermittent clicking that was not present in the C4 that was racked next to my car, based on the back-to-back comparison it was a pretty substantial noise, I must have just been accustomed to it and thus thought it was normal.
I remember in a recent issue of excellence, there was an article about a few companies who are now doing rebuilds on m96 engines, does anyone know offhand what those companies are, and if they would perhaps rebuild transmissions as well? I probably trashed the issue, but if anyone can recall those companies I'd like to check with them about tranny rebuilds.
Thanks for all the help thus far.... How about donations? : )
+1......or go to the stealer ....they should know for sure.....i had them check things for free before......just as for a tranny oil change then right after u drive off tell them something is not right.....
I'm not sure what year your C4 is but .....
Wasn't there a recall for some very few select C4 models for a transmission replacement ? (It may have been for early 997 models, I just have a vague memory of seeing something). It might be worth a call to your local Porsche dealer.
There was also a bulletin regarding a control unit replacement on the 996 or 993 cars as well, if memory serves correct.
+1 for the refill and then just drive it.
What's the worst that could happen?
Noise from the tranny isn't really a good enough reason for me to drop 10G. I'd drive it till it stops working. But that's just me.
I did some quick checking and here ya go for tiptronic transmissions requiring replacement, there is a vin# range of cars with each bulletin.
2004-2005 996 Service action W562
and also
2005 997 Service action W562
It covers certain VIN's for noises in tiptronic trans at high speeds or a limited operating program. You will have to check your Vin# and then the trans # also.
It may be a long shot for you but if your car falls in the range then it means a free transmission, parts and labor, from your friendly Porsche dealer.
If you are in the Dallas or Houston area PM me and I can get you with a dealer that knows about this and will be willing to help you out.
Hope it works out for you,
