They are about 75.00/each from Carnewal.com or (150-200/each from dealerships) Exhasut tips - you can find used ones - these are hard to find but pop up once in awhile 200.00/pair or 500 from dealerships.

Its fairly easy to find used taillights for 99-03 996's the turbo ones will prob have to be ordered by Porsche.

That means you will have to change every single fender on the car, front and back, new harnesses and an assortment of other things.

Its better not to replace the rear quarters because that is the actual structure of the car and the front fenders are just bolt ons along with the bumpers.

Oh yeah I also plan on running 996tt turbo takeoffs with them and I assume the offsets should be just fine given the new wider oem rear fenders and that the front offset is the same.

It seems that my best bet to get out of it the least unscathed would be to put c4s rear quarters on that way I could retain the same lights or use c4s lights, but more importantly the decklid is the same and I could keep mine, to keep costs down.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am thinking about doing the turbo rear quarter panels, and rear bumper, and contemplating doing the turbo front end of 02 litronics, buckets, fenders, and turbo bumper. Is there anything else that is involved? Has anyone done either conversion? Can I remove the front fenders by unbolting or is there welding required or anything? Please let me know what you guys think! Am I mad? Oh yeah I also plan on running 996tt turbo takeoffs with them and I assume the offsets should be just fine given the new wider oem rear fenders and that the front offset is the same. thanks. Sean
are you kidding me. No way is it cheaper. I already have to replace the right rear quarter panel rear bumper and right tail light, right door etc, so it won't cost that much more for the rear end conversion, The front, now that's a matter of what I can sell the old parts for which are perfect.
Well the car was in an accident ,so that is why I am going to replace the rear end stuff with turbo parts, might as well upgrade. I am going to balance it out by doing the front also and selling my stock stuff to fund it. The paint cost will go up a bit but not too much because the right side and rear had to be painted. It will also make it a better job as it won't have to be feathered. So 2k more worth in parts for the upgrade v. 30k for a used c4s hmmm. yeah
SPR,
This isn't a good idea and is really not worth it for just the look. There is a lot more involved than just buying turbo body parts and putting them on. The turbo is a widebody style car. That means you will have to change every single fender on the car, front and back, new harnesses and an assortment of other things. I've been hearing that a 99 to 02 conversion on the front of a 996 is 7K alone. Might be better to just trade in for a newer car.
Bob
I don't think you have fully priced the project.
The fact that the car has been in an accident does give you an advantage. But how much? Get 2 estimates. 1 for the car to be fixed as it was, and another for the transformation.
SPR,
If you do go for the conversion, I guess you would be the only person, at least as far as I know to own a watercooled ... C2 widebody. After the conversion, would you identify your car as a C2S? Awesome.
Still waiting for Porsche to come out with a C2S.....
Good for you - go for it. I think you'll like it in the end. Only if you get the parts wholesale and not do the rear quarters but its your money. Ruff is starting to do these narrow body conversions as well. I dont know about having the 99 front with turbo rear- dosent seem right to me- its like putting a 930 wing on a narrow SC.
I've done the conversion on my 99 c2 cab. I would recommend the 02 litronics. depending on how bad your rear quarter is - I would stick with doing the front/rear bumpers only and fix the r quarters and get aero sidskirts. Definitely do the front fenders- no welding required.
Its better not to replace the rear quarters because that is the actual structure of the car and the front fenders are just bolt ons along with the bumpers. I mean fix it if you can and if your car is that badly damaged - change the quarters. It will still look nice to the next person looking to buy a customized car and they will like the fact that you kept it clean not messing with the body frame. After you do this - get some 19's with a fat lip on them and you'll still see a big difference. But thats your call in the end. It looks better to have a customized look rather than looking like the turbo - it will seem more like a kit vs a highly customized c2 by doing the bumpers and front fenders.
These are absolute wholesale prices I've researched below and retail is about double:
Lights- 1600/pair harness 150.00 80/each for the buckets. F Fender 500/pair. If you have clear lights - sell them on Ebay- Boxster owners love them - 400-500 recoupe. Front TT Bumper with all grilles inserts, bottom lip, and light trim for about 800-1000 and they dont include the bottom lip, grills or trim- that'll cost you almost 700.00 alone.
The rear bumper costs about 500- 1100 - that doesnt include the bumper guards- Hard to find (250/pair at cost- i bought these from the dealer) and retainers- about 150.00(trim pieces that go around the exhaust tip grooves and along the bottom The R bumper conversion is better to not split the bumper (thats a saftely issue for me) but to move the mounting point around. (labor will cost you for this) The bumper will fit without cutting.
You will also need the fin covers (black plastic grills that go inside of the vent opeings - ie C4S. They are about 75.00/each from Carnewal.com or (150-200/each from dealerships) Exhasut tips - you can find used ones - these are hard to find but pop up once in awhile 200.00/pair or 500 from dealerships. Lastly you will need to get the pipe that extends from the muffler to the tip s from a muffler specialist becasue they dont exist. I would say the parts would cost wholesale/used for about 5000.00 without R Quarters/Taillights/TT vents/new rear deck(the bolts will be in differenet places for the old deck to attach the r quarters) etc. Also keep in mind if you do R quarters you will need new sideskirts, wheel well covers, possibly suspension mods, springs, etc. The rear quarters and parts will run almost 3-4k and you will need new wheels at least 18X11's or 19x11s - another 2k+.
After paint/labor the front conversion and rear bumper will cost about 7-10k and 10-14k with Quarters, etc. Not including your new wheels. It's not cheap. Find the right bodyshop and have patience- you'll see it hopefully in the spring if you start now.
good luck
Awesome. finally some encouragement. Well regarding the rear quarters. The one has to be replaced as it got dented a bit and I am against bodyworking it back or whatever, hence the reason for just doing both with the turbo rear quarters. I am going to get a set of turbo rims as they are cheap and I like them. And of course the turbo rear bumper. A couple more questions- do I have to change the rear lights or is that basically because of the fatter turbo decklid?
cool about the front ,so I can simply unbolt the front fenders and do that myself? I have had the bumper and lights out before for doing other projects, so it's not a big deal. I know on the 993t they are epoxied or bead rolled or someting in the inside. On the rear again though, I can get away with not doing the rear quarter panels? I was originally going to do just the bumper, but given that the one quarter panel needs to be replaced and the conflicting things I heard about 99's and the turbo rear I figured it would make the install easier. I still think I would rather do both. I do have to speak with the body shop about the additional labor involved for the other quarter panel etc. thanks it good to know what I can expect ahead of time with fitment etc for when it starts I can address the problems beforehand so I won't get charged R&D fees!
Yes, will new turbo taillights, buckets and assembly. The lights are much bigger. Like I said you will need a new decklid/tail too. Even the C4s deckid and the TT decklids are different and can't be interchanged. Its fairly easy to find used taillights for 99-03 996's the turbo ones will prob have to be ordered by Porsche. The fenders for the fronts are just bolt ons what what I understand. I would ask the bodyshop if they can straighten it out (rear quarter) they can do wonders- you would be surprised what some shops can do. But cutting the fender is more extensive (welding etc) and takes a lot of hours. especially on both sides. You mentioned the door having to be replaced. I would get a new door and that would have to go on first- they will use that as a baseline and make the curves look right. If you are looking for turbo 2 wheels instead of twists- they make them for 18X10's instead of 18X11's ( they were an option for Boxsters/996)
I think you maybe looking at more parts for the rear. I'm not quite sure how much interior assembly is involved.
It's been done - your conversion on '99 cars. Look at Ebaymotors and seach on 996 - I've seen 3 in there - 2cabs and 1 blue coupe. I'll post my photos next week after I put on my 19's.
SPR,
Go for it! I'd love to see 996TT rear quarter panels on a C2 along with the turbo front and rear to go with it. Good luck and post pictures as your new car starts to take shape.
Mark
P.S. jkim996 -- How about some pics of your 996?
SPR,
We'll have a site dedicated to converted cars - LOL. Hey the research alone took a few months. Nobody had answers when I started to the details involved- I even had to tell the bodyshop what to do at times because they didn't know and forget asking any dealers- they only know part numbers. Pay close attention to the bodyshop and ask a lot of questions and don't be shy - be on top of them especially if they have never done one of these before.
Mark,
Photos coming next week- as you know its been raining around here in the east coast. You'll like the photos with the 19"s on there anyway.
Great thanks guys. It seems that my best bet to get out of it the least unscathed would be to put c4s rear quarters on that way I could retain the same lights or use c4s lights, but more importantly the decklid is the same and I could keep mine, to keep costs down. Are there any differences known about the front c4s v. turbo front end stuff? I would assume that in that area they are different also with the ducts for the radiatiors, but the support is the same. I am trying to get the best picture possible to see what the price differentials will be. thanks again . Sean
Even if you use C4S quarters you will need the bigger tail lights and I don't know if the decklid is the same? As for the front - you can use all of the TT parts. The only difference is the bottom lip. The bodyshop would have to cut the impact bar inside about 1.5 inch on each side and the ducts will have to be cut as well. The harness conversion is a little tricky but thats it. I would recommend at this point to paint the entire car.
I do know the decklid is the same but just didn't know about the tail lights. Right I looked up the impact bar mods and the ducts. So there is a harness conversion eh? btw I am definitely going to paint the whole car, that's why I am going to do the front also! sweet.
I think you're gonna need a new deck lid. The lines for the C4s and the turbo are different form the C2's. They (c4s and TT) has a more angular indentation where the red and white parts meet on the light. examine the TT, C4s and the C2 and you will notice a big difference. I've also heard you can't use a TT deck on a C4s -even though they look the same. The bolt patterns are different. So depending on which fenders you use you will have to use the same part numbers unless you go aftermarket like techart. Same reason for the front fenders- the front fenders looks close to the '99- compared to the '03 but they are different.
yeah I have heared the same on the rear decklid with the turbo being too wide and the c4s and mine being the same. As for the front fenders they are listed as the same part number via pet.
good luck with the conversion - no matter how good the shop is no car is perfect after a seriousl accident ( not sure how bad yours was) I hope the conversion coems out to your liking but I personally would dump the car and start over if the frame was bent - good luck
