The only problems revealed by the PPI are a slight oil seepage near varioram (probably a $50 o-ring according to mechanic) and the brake lights don't work.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm considering buying a '99 996. The only problems revealed by the PPI are a slight oil seepage near varioram (probably a $50 o-ring according to mechanic) and the brake lights don't work. In the PPI the brake light fuses were checked, and the brakes do communicate with the cruise control (applying brakes cancels the cruise control function as expected). Do you know of any known problems with brake lights? I'm trying to determine if this is a serious problem or a minor one. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

There don't appear to be any TSBs on 996 brake lights. Try your rear fog light. At least you'll know if the bulb is ok. As far as the oil leakage is concerned, I'm no expert, but an oil leak anywhere on a 996 would concern me. Just my .02

POST 3Original post

The brake light switch is a problem on the older cars. It works on the brake pedal. Jeff

Jven, I think I bought this car! If it is a Ocean blue tan interior with 45K on the clock in Los angeles I bought it. Email me at [email removed]

POST 5Original post

FYI it was the brake switch that was bad. $12 and 5 minutes later fixed.

POST 6Original post

Oil seepage near VarioCam in a 1999 is a leaking solenoid switch. Definitely more than a $50 job.
