no one asked "how well will a GT3 hold it's value if it sits in a garage and has nearly no miles on it" - not that it would change much anyway.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Considering that the 340HP 997 is coming next year, and that a S model is expected with around 380HP and lightweight to compete against the high number of high power cars from other brands (C6, GTR, NSX, ...)
I doubt it will drop much at all...based upon searching for a used 99 GT3 for when I get back to Germany they just haven't seemed to come down lots over the years.
harrY
it'll get hammered just like all p-cars do. it will probably get hammered more than most p-cars (since many poseurs didn't know what they were getting themselves into - ala GT2), but shouldn't get hammered as badly as the GT2 since it was vastly more overpriced than was the GT3.
I agree with Ben. There are already complaints being voiced: too harsh, too noisy, too low, too many rattles and squeeks, tramlines and turns too fast (?)...... I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm thinking it will be significantly less than a used '04 TT, closer to a used C4S price. I'm keeping my eyes open.
I predict an unsettled market initialy while the poseurs and speculators are trying to get rid of theirs . Long term depends on a few things... how many Gt3's will be produced and will PAG make a GT3 for the US for the next generation 911. I do not think they will lose value as much as a 996 Carrera, Boxster, Turbo, or even the GT2. I say this because of the limited production numbers and the fact that the GT3 (along with the GT3rs) is the homologation car for the GT3RSr. These limited/special production cars have always held their value as evidenced by something like the 964RS America, 911 & 964 Speedsters, and factory slope nose turbos.
My $.02.
Sloth:
I noticed you own one.
I need an auto-x, race track, 25 miles round trip commuter.
The 04 C2 with the aerokit (8k), X51 (14k), no sunroof with no other option runs 90k+.
That car still need suspension work and it doesn't have LSD then I need PSM. Most likely a $95k car.
I won't get a big discount because it's a 04. There is no brand new 03 available with those specs in any color in US.
Probably I can get the car for 90k. However based on C2 depreciation, I'll be paying X amount mothly for a car that will have a value of 60k in two years.
If a choose to get a 04GT3 with no options (100k). I'll be paying X amount plus $200 montly. I believe that a GT3 won't hit 70k in two years, most likely 80k+.
Based on that I will loose less money with the GT3.
Am I right?
see porsche's recent pathetic response to PCCB warranty on cars "exceeding the speed limit". warranty, smarranty. if you plan to track the car, why not just buy a 2000 for the $30Ks, and put an SC on it which will thrash an X51 and produces more power than a GT3?
You have to remember one thing as well. When you sell your car, you will be competing with GT3 garage queens and off lease cars that were never autocrossed or tracked, and most likely have low mileage.
I think this is silly, no offense. It seems you want a GT3. It seems you can afford a GT3. Then get the GT3. It makes absolutely no sense to get a C2 then try to make it into a GT3. First of all, a C2 will NEVER be a GT3, no matter how close it mat look and how many options you put in it. Second, when it comes to sell it, it will still be a C2 and the options will add close to bupkus to it's resale value.
So, between a GT3 wannabe C2 vs a true GT3, you will lose a ton more money with the wannabe. Get the GT3.
Sorry, I don't think these cars are going to get "hammered" on resale like a regular 996. The reason is simple - through October they have delivered a grand total of 201 GT-3s and only 30 for the month. It will take a long, long, time to catch up with demand for these, if ever. With that kind of exclusivity it is going to hold it's value pretty well.
The demand isn't there anymore. There are dealerships with GT3s sitting unsold as stated in several posts here and there. There is one right here where I live that has sat for three weeks now.
They will crash down a chunk and then should be much steadier than the regular cars for the reasons stated. Especially people who thought it was actually a street car or investment need to be cleared out.
I'm definitely with Palting on the modify or buy thing. There is no way anyone will ever pay you back for modifying a C2, every nickel will be simply "spent." Even aero kits and full leather are mostly free once a car is a couple of years old.
I'm not able to opine as to the future value of a GT3 or, for that matter, any other car. I do, however, know one thing: it is an excellent vehicle and if one wants a true sports car rather than a Mercedes SL type luxo cruiser, I would recommend it without hesitation.
You are madder than I am! What is wrong with you? Everybody knows that Porsche cars have one of the highest resale values of any car made.
In particular the GT3 second hand values are rock solid. Only Boxster owners will see a marked fall in their car's value when the new Boxster arrives next year. But then the Boxster is an entry level model and so that is to be expected.
Here I'm selling mine ...
I'm updating the asking price on the GT3 to $109,000, OBO.
I paid a little ($5K) over MSRP. The car has 1500 miles on it. Car is located in Chicago. If interested, please email me at

"You are madder than I am! What is wrong with you? Everybody knows that Porsche cars have one of the highest resale values of any car made."
i'm not mad at all. most of the resale studies you've seen (in the U.S.) are stale (in fact, many date back to the 993 which is still ding well) and don't represent putrid resale values over the last couple years. GT2s = hammered, TTs = hammered, C2 and C4s = hammered, Boxsters and Boxster S = hammered, Cayenne = hammered. Next up, GT3.
As many of us know, certain models do better come resale time (eg. 993 C4S and 993 TT). Of the 996 model Porsches, the GT3 should do better than the rest IMO.
The GT3 is a sweet car.................. our lifetime is of a short duration. Since you are ready to spend $90,000 on a C2 ...........go get the GT3. Its rare and will be alot of fun. There is no car out there that holds it value when you buy it new........or even holds it value after several years.
The only car that is holding its value no matter what and is worth considerably more than sticker even though its came out in 2001........the car holding it value is the FERRARI 30 MODENA SPIDER.
I want one of these...............must wait UNTIL the new Ferrari V8 ?comes out..............and wait some more until they drop down low..........wait some more again............kids going to college........ most likely still never get one!
Have a great day
Joe
resale? are you kidding me? if you cared about resale value, please buy real estate not automobile. every time you buy a car, think of it as throwing $$$ out the window. if you hope to get more than 60% of MSRP back when you sell in 2-4 years, forget cars!
My eyes popped out. I was checking F cars in ebay.
The 360 Spider is selling over sticker, een though it's a 2 years old car.
Then I saw a 97 550 Maranello in $85K. Wao, a 230K plus car selling for one third its price. That's depreciation.
Probably I could cheat on Porsche for a while and get a 550 for 1 year. At that time a GT3 will be around 85K rather than 108k( quote from the dealer).
Only problem is I have no clue on maintenance cost and reliability on 550. Do you know any web source?
Who cares about the resale value of sports cars in the US? You can only drive a maximum of 55 MPH anyway. Its no wonder sports cars depreciate over there. Why pay over $100K for a car that can't be driven faster than a bicycle?
I don't want to be rude.
We do care about sports cars resale value.
There are more racetracks in US that in any other country. They are safer racetracks because there are a lot of lawyers in US.
Autucrossing takes you over the 55MPH limit legally.
We can use racetracks in our street cars and drive well beyond the 55MPH mark.
Cars depreciate regardless of being sports cars, SUV, sedan, etc.
NJ
don't get hung up on resale. Its a car. No massed produced new car is an investment. Never has been. Never will be. But, I totally understand the desire to reduce the loss. Looking at UK prices of 964 RS and 993 RS variants, their prices are still very reasonable after a decade. GT3 prices in the UK (only 106 RHD 1999-2000 MY UK cars) are at 55k-62k. Retail was 76k, so 14k-19 loss over 3/4 years (20% or so).
Get the GT3 - 'standard' 996s will never be quite as desirable.
With only 750 GT3's being produced for North America, I highly doubt it's resale will be hammered. Of any of the P-cars out there, it will truly be a collectors item, particularly if it is not tracked. There are no guarantees that the US will ever see a GT3 again and if one is offered on the upcoming 997 series, it's will be a few years beyond that before there is a 997 GT3. Modded cars only lose their value....
Madcaplaughs,
i agree with NJ-GT that here in USA, many of us track and we do go at a decent clip! depreciation of cars has nothing to do with USA speed limit. furthermore, you seem to imply that in UK, price depreciate less due to the fact you can drive faster? well, i think lots of it has to do with mileage driven as well. i put 20,000 weekend miles on each of my cars per year (i have two cars) and at that pace, my GT3 or my 993 will depreciate very fast. but hey, i get to drive that much more than those cars with lower mileage....
i wish cars don't depreciate, but the fact is they do....
Relax, I was only trying to wind up "ben in lj" just look at his posts and you will agree that he desrves it!
No wonder you have so many race tracks with your low speed limits! Although here in the UK we are capped at 70MPH The police will usually tolerate 85MPH on good "A" roads and motorways.
hey mad, i don't get it?
fwiw, my c2 cab had an msrp of $90k and i put nearly $20k in it two years in a row full well knowing the car is probably not worth more than low $60s (if that) with a mere 13k on it. does that sound like someone who is concerned with resale?
I've had a new GT3 for a little over a month with 1700 miles so far. It is my third 911 (and have been driving Porsches of every model except the 928 since 1971). Sure it's stiff but it's a sports car for God's sake! I don't want a SL. Doesn't ride that much worse than my 964 C4 did and not much different than my friend's nearly new C4S. I'm glad Porsche imported a real sports car, especially after all their time spent on a truck...and it's at ROW ride height thank God. My 993 with US 030 looked like it was stilts. Still don't know their rational for raising US cars- always thought it was a DOT thing but then why can they send the GT3 over at ROW height?? I plan on keeping this car for a while so it's resale is of less concern- just enjoy driving it! No point in trying to rationalize that kind of purchase anyway...
Ben, new cars depreciate, its a fact of life. Here in the UK a new car is worth at least 10% less than you paid for it as soon as you drive it off the forecourt. Most cars over here lose 50% of their value in the first three years, and some models do even worse than that! Porsche cars however lose less than most. In fact after the initial three year depreciation a well maintained Porsche hardly depreciates further at all.
The GT3 is a niche car that does not appeal to everyone. However it is comparatively rare and will always fetch a premium price just like every other track orientated Porsche car.

all that is true here too.
"In fact after the initial three year depreciation a well maintained Porsche hardly depreciates further at all."
that used to be true here until the 986 and 996 came out.
"The GT3 is a niche car that does not appeal to everyone. However it is comparatively rare and will always fetch a premium price just like every other track orientated Porsche car."
the GT2 is a track oriented car that stickered for about $200k. they can be found in the low $130Ks around here now.
One swallow doesn't make a summer. And one well used GT at mid $130s doesn't set the market.
The GT 2 stickered for about $180K and the used ones are selling for north of $150K, absence a distress sale (or impatience). The better the condition the better the price.
"And one well used GT at mid $130s doesn't set the market."
? i personally know of a couple that went off at that price - only one had more than 4k miles. besides, i didn't know we were talking about garage queens. this entire thread began about the GT3. no one asked "how well will a GT3 hold it's value if it sits in a garage and has nearly no miles on it" - not that it would change much anyway.
"and the used ones are selling for north of $150K"
one uninformed buyer getting reemed doesn't set the market. they are not selling used for north of $150k in the USA - regardless of the miles.
"The GT 2 stickered for about $180K"
MSRP STARTS at $192K
http://content3.us.porsche.com/prod/...usaenglish/gt2
The 02/03 MSRP did not start at $192. At least the one I bought or the many I looked at didn't. If memory serves me correctly the MSRP (before options) was around $179K.
The 04 (increased HP and carbon fibre= increased price), have you seen a used for sale yet? If so, let me know I'll pay mid $130s all day long for them. There are only rumoured to be 9 so it would be manageable!
Let's be careful with the facts here! Your response implies a used 04 GT2 can be had for mid $ 130s. You've given new meaning to the term "California dreaming"
Check your prices a little more!
"The 02/03 MSRP did not start at $192. At least the one I bought or the many I looked at didn't. If memory serves me correctly the MSRP (before options) was around $179K. "
Hard to believe the MSRP rose $13k in 04. Further, you hardly even get tires on a Porsche paying MSRP and options usually take it up at least $10 to $20k.
"Your response implies a used 04 GT2 can be had for mid $ 130s."
Didn't mean to imply an 04 could, but 02 can - and have been. (04s will soon follow). Btw, you could buy GT2s ALL DAY LONG for low $140s without breaking a sweat. That's well over $40k off of strippers which is well over a 20% discount to MSRP (more like 30% for those who HAVE paid in the mid $130Ks). This goes a long way to debunking the argument put forth in this thread about how much better the track oriented 911s hold up as well as any extrapolation of this bogus claim to the GT3.
I still think the GT3, like the '73 RS, the 964 RS and the 993 RS will maintain a high value for RHD UK cars in the UK. I expect similar results for the GT in the US, epecially if only 750 or so are made for the US.
GT2s are grossly over priced, the used market reflects this - when they first came out some were selling for $220k. The GT3 and GT2 are two very different markets, there's gonna be a lot more demand for the GT3, where as the GT2 will appeal only to that very wealthy Porsche enthusiast. At $200k most other people are shopping Ferrari, Lamborghini or a new house...
Dealer says they don't have discount available on the GT3 because allocations are limited.
Quote is 108805.00.
I'm still trying to decide on Basalt Black (metallic) new color in 03 or Artic Silver which I like better but it's too common. BTW, Atlas grey is actually a dark blue/green.

My estimation on the value for this car next year is 90k. The 997 will be better looking, heavier, more expensive and less powerful.
This Porsche is in a class all of its own. It's the lightest 996 with the exception of C2 with 17" and the 50 or so 04GT3RS.
Ben in lj
Hard to believe or not, the price did go up because of the extra HP and carbon fibre and there's only supposed to be 9 for the US market. Rarer than a CGT, at less than half the price! Affordable wouldn't you say.
There are no stripper GT 2s they're all pretty well equipped unless you want the endless "fu fu" options.
Time has always demonstrated that "track" Porsches have retained their value better that other. The RSA is a case in point and Porsche couldn't give them away in 93/94.
Watch what happens when all those GT3 drivers master that car ..they will want the GT 2 because of the extra torque, not to mention exclusivity.
However, like they say in the financial world...past performance is not indictative of future results! So we'll see.
It always better to buy the car because of the fun factor...go buy one of those cheap GT 2s it'll put two smiles on your face. One because you got it cheap, and two) because you have new challenges ahead of you!
NJ-GT,
There are so many people "laying in the weeds" hoping the GT3 value will drop that it is very unlikely occur. The economy is recovering, the car is meeting the expectations of purchasers, and people will see what it can do at local events, the desireability is going to increase...of course there won't be any new ones available by then.
The value is in the enjoyment of driving it..not the potential resale. I'm sold, sounds like you are too!
