All has gone well so far, Ive used a resistor to stop the airbag light coming on, Ive got 12v for the horn and the horn sounds either when I tap the wire to the Momo boss or to the steering column.

At this point you should be able to use a wire to test the connection between the spring connector and the steering column, it should activate the horn.
Leading evidence: 'Use resistor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Test connection between the spring connector and the steering column' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The 12v connection from the same connector is then wired into the new spring connector using another connector.

Using a connector, this links to the ground wire on the red horn connector.

When I want to convert back, I simply wire the relevant wires on the clock spring back into the red connector using the connector clips and reassemble.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all, my latest project is installing a Momo prototipo steering wheel. All has gone well so far, Ive used a resistor to stop the airbag light coming on, Ive got 12v for the horn and the horn sounds either when I tap the wire to the Momo boss or to the steering column.
However, when I turn the ignition on, the horn doesnt sound. Having got the multimeter out, it seems the steering column stops being grounded when the ignition is on, or even when its off and the key is in the ignition. Any suggestions on whats happening and how to fix it?
The Momo is great and gives me more space above my legs which is fantastic. Ive just got to sort the horn!
There are two wires from the clockspring into the wheel hub. One is ground that other is for the horn relay. Connect both wires to the Momo button and it will work great. The Momo button I bought had an extra wire included that wasn't attached to anything that is intended to use as a ground wire.
Yes I did. I actually need to swap wheels back over after I had to put the airbag one on for the MOT. My solution isn't pretty, I'll be changing wheels back tomorrow so I'll take a picture of what I've done for you.
The dual connector that deeds the airbag and the horn is the solution. You should have put the resistor in the airbag connector already. For the horn you have the 12v feed going to the spring to the brass ring on the wheel boss to the horn button. You need to create a proper ground to the rest of the steering column to complete the circuit when the button is pressed. I've had a few goes at it, hopefully the latest solution is the least worst.
Also, if your steering column adjustment lock is not properly locked, then you won’t have a good ground when the ignition is on, but it will work fine with the key out.
I spent WAY too much time troubleshooting why my horn wouldn’t work with the ignition on until I found the lever just slightly out of position.
Here's my setup. Its setup this way as in the UK, we have our annual MoT and I need to put the original wheel back on to show the airbag is present. Hence being able to easily put the original clock spring back on and wire the horn back in is useful.
I have a jubilee clip around the steering column (the part that doesn't move!) holding a wire onto the column. This isn't ideal and has taken a few attempts to get a secure, consistent connection. Using a connector, this links to the ground wire on the red horn connector. The 12v connection from the same connector is then wired into the new spring connector using another connector. At this point you should be able to use a wire to test the connection between the spring connector and the steering column, it should activate the horn. Then its on with the wheel, check that the wire on the wheel also activates the horn when touching the body of the wheel. If that all works, you can now wire in the horn button and you're all good.
When I want to convert back, I simply wire the relevant wires on the clock spring back into the red connector using the connector clips and reassemble.
Well I wish I'd read this before I spent 4 hours last Saturday working this out for myself. This was exactly my issue, once I fixed the steering adjustment lock then I was able to create an earth with a Jubilee clamp like
@RobsterPC
has done. Thanks guys, I've now got a working horn regardless of key position.
