Suggestion

My understanding is it's a casting problem in the engine that causes the failure and they just replace the whole thing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well this is an odd one. My car was supposed to be on a truck yesterday on its way to Denver. I just got a call from Champion Motorgroup that the trucker dropped it back off at the dealership. It was smoking from the engine big time. It is in their shop being evaluated. The dealership owner is going to be calling me to talk about it. I think that IF I keep it they should put a full warrenty on it and refund my shipping. What do you guys think?

POST 2Original post

If it's really smoking, that's potentially a coolant/oil leak, which means the engine is toast ... and that probably means a new engine from Porsche, if the car's under warranty, but it also means getting approval from a Porsche dealer on a used car you just bought ... and hoping for goodwill if it's out of warranty ... possibly a long shot? You can't register it if it's not running, presumably, how would it pass inspection? And it's an out of state title. Not to mention waiting days (or weeks) for the car to be on the road again. Upside is a 2-year warranty on the new motor. Lots of 996s out there for sale, including certified ones from Porsche dealers ... I'd say think hard about it. Do they already have your money? POST 3Original post

Rhut Rhoe.........., What model year is the car?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah the have my $$. Good thing is they warrent the car for 3 months and 3k miles. If the coolant sprung a leak why would that automaticlly toast the engine? It is a 99 996 C2 Argggggggh

POST 5Original post

Tim, Were they driving your car out to Denver? Was the car sitting on a truck and it just spontaneously combusted...what gives? How did it just 'start' to smoke? BTW, you live in Co., why not look in Cali or Texas for a car, drier, no harsh winters, closer to you...just a thought...the place where I got my car has some decent looking 00s for around 50...expomotorcars.com

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They were starting it and putting it on the truck. So it was not running down the road when this happened. I bought this one because of the options, color, price. It also spent most of its life in the Atlanta area according to Carfax. I bought a car from Expo before. They are good people.

POST 7Original post

My understanding is it's a casting problem in the engine that causes the failure and they just replace the whole thing. The cost is, I think, about $11k. I don't believe anyone rebuilds these engines because it's more cost-effective to replace it. I would be leery if they say they can "fix" the problem. I would certainly get a second opinion on the car. If they haven't delivered title and car to you, the transaction's not finished. Don't get in a situation where they say, "Have the car looked over and send us the bill" because they will s--- when they see an $11k invoice (plus labor). Vic 99 C2 cab

POST 8Original post

With all due respect, I think it is nuts to take this car with it's demonstrated material defect from a dealer that's 1,500 mi. from where you live. As a lawyer,I'd advise you to rescind the sale and get your money back. It's one thing to buy a new car from a distant dealer because the local dealers still have to honor the factory warranty. But to buy a used car, out of warranty from a dealer so far away I think is asking for trouble. None of your local dealers are going to care about your problems and Champion will have your money and no incentive to help you. I don't even see how getting a warranty from Champion helps you when you're so far away. How is the warranty going to be honored in Denver? I know it's hard because emotionally you feel the car is yours. But there are tons of '99's around; walk away.

POST 9Original post

Echo that. No way do you take posession of the car now. Not really sure you should ever accept the car. Maybe if they certify what they have done to it in writing and PCNA agrees that thwhatever the fix was, solves the problem. (IE they extend the warranty for that engine) I think you lucked out and should take advantage of that luck. If it happened on the delivery end of the trip rather than the pick up end you would be stuck with it, at least until you got the lawyers involved. Do they have all of your money? If not, you have a good barganing chip. They can still "source" you a car from somewhere else and save a sale, and you can have them keep the '99..... good luck. Echo also that a later model is a better "bet". The 99's have "issues". Edit/add from other thread: And so goes the myth that you can check out the mechanical history of a 993 with a query of the OBD II system. On the other hand, this is great news for those contemplating the purchase of a 996 car. An OBD II query should be mandatory for a PPI, in my humble opinion.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So if I understand you guys correctly, if they have not delivered the car I ahve a chance to nullify the deal? They cashed our check already and my bank is looking to see if they have title yet. Boy this sucks. This was going to be my first P-Car

POST 11Original post

If you financed through a bank, that helps, because they will fight like mad bastards to protect their money ... what did the dealer say? They still have the car in their possession. Vic 99 C2 cab

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They still have it in their possesion. The dealer has yet to call with a status. I bet its toast. It was such a great looking car to

POST 13Original post

What options etc. are you looking for? Coupe or cab? How much did you pay? Vic 99 C2 cab

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, the engine is history. They are making good on reversing the transaction. They are getting me the options on another one they have in stock. Almost identicle with less miles. We will see what they offer. I paid 42,500 for this one. Traction, CD, Aero, 19in rims, C2 Well thankfully it happened there.

POST 15Original post

19's in Denver? Summer would be fun, but you better get a set of 17's with some snow tires!

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That is why I have other cars 18in snows on my 330iC works like a champ.
