Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ended up going with Mobil 1, in the factory recommended 0W-40.

I did my first oil change back in October, no biggie at all.

Suggestion
Yes, I know how to change oil but I like to have all the tool sizes and filter information and I remember something about a crush washer and I've never done it before on my 996.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks to all for the tips on this forum. This was one of the easiest oil changes I have ever done. I backed the car out of the garage until the rear end hung over the driveway. My garage floor is raised by about 1-1/2 inches compared to the driveway, so this gave me enough clearance to get under the car. No ramps needed! I purchased the AmPro oil filter wrench at Advance Auto Parts for $5.99, 74mm, 14-point. It fit perfectly.
I ended up going with Mobil 1, in the factory recommended 0W-40. I used an OEM oil filter element. I seriously considered Red Line Oil or perhaps Amsoil, but those aren't easily found in Fort Wayne, IN. I've been happy with Mobil 1 for many years.
Weekend maintenance task number one... complete!
The only 'hard' part for me was having a large(deep) enough pan to collect the engine oil , as it comes out so fast. Good for you Dennis. My 911 always drives better after an oil and filter change.
+1
That made me laugh. The oil came out shockingly fast. I did have a little splatter over the edge of the drain pan. I have a 15-quart pan, and it is the kind with a shallow reservoir on top that drains into a deeper pan on the bottom. I thought it was going to overflow. Fortunately it didn't.
Barn,
I would that this oil pan works well. It is low profile, holds 10 quarts, and the large yellow top screws off and on to contain the oil so you can take it to the auto parts store to dispose of the oil properly.
Oil Drain Pan
I'm going to start doing my own oil changes on my 996. Is there a, uh...tutorial available somewhere?
Yes, I know how to change oil but I like to have all the tool sizes and filter information and I remember something about a crush washer and I've never done it before on my 996. Basically I want you guys to do most of the work for me.
Oh, and if someone could swing over and handle the labor, that would be good, too.
oil mobil 1-$66.00
tranny oil-$65.00
row 030 susp.-$1100.00
hardwiring invisible turn signal,tomtom,laser/jamer
installing engine protection plate
all labor=$500.00
result on my face =
i have my mech for years now and couldnt be happier with results and price...
Yes, I can testify that oil comes out shockingly fast. I had a 12 quart collection pan, but the hole in the top was too small for the volume.....and the side was cracked. I'm the proud new owner of a pressure washer.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who experienced the oil "gusher" my first time...my garage floor looked like an oil spill because the plastic container(pan) cuoldn't deal with the amount of oil discharged all at once through the drain hole .
Funny, I don't recall this coming up in the pictorial IFUs that I followed . . .
But my garage floor needed cleaning anyway. And the shirt was an old one anyway . . .
