Also My tech said it was probably a worn mesh bearing what ever that is.
Leading evidence: 'worn mesh bearing what ever' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'worn mesh bearing what ever' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If it's under warranty then I would push to have it fixed (replaced :-)

I said, "I have to drive it to New York this weekend; is it going to blow up on me?" And he said, "Only if you drive it in first the whole way." Did they tell you it was imperative to replace the gearbox?

If you do end up requiring a new gearbox , get Porsche to replace the RMS and advise you on how much clutch life you have left.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I noticed tonight that my 6-speed 99 C2 cab has a whine in the gearbox. If the car is coasting, clutch pushed completely in, the gearbox will whine if the shifter is in first gear, or even pushed toward touching first gear. Second gear, third gear, etc., completely silent. The faster the car is rolling, the higher pitched the whine is, and it goes down to a low whine as you roll to a stop.
Ran it by the Porsche dealer; their chief technician ran it around the parking lot. He can't remember noticing another 996 do this, but he's not sure. I know that my 993 didn't do it.
If you can, next time you drive your 6-speed, get it rolling about 20mph or so in neutral, push in your clutch, and put it in first gear, and post whether you hear a whine or not. It's very noticeable. I want to know if this is a normal characteristic of a 996 6-speed or if I have some problem with my gearbox.
Thanks for your assistance ...

Nope! Not normal. Mine's about to get a new gearbox for that *very* reason although I also get that whine just as the car takes off in first too.
It tends to blend into the engine at about 800 revs.
With my car being a cab I get to hear evrything so I didn't really notice it
that much. It was my technician who pointed it out. But it's more noticeable
when you just coast in 1st gear but with clutch engaged (pushed home).
Apparently there are no replacement parts and it can't be refurbished.
Hence the requirement for a new gearbox.
Sorry to tell you the bad news.
Oh, I also wanted to add that this whining has been there for quite some time. As I said I just assumed it was normal. But the car drives perfectly and doesn't jump out of gear.
Interesting ... the Porsche tech suspected it had something to do with the operating sleeve, but he also said he felt it wasn't neccesarily a bad noise, that even if something was wrong it could last 100k miles without a problem. I said, "I have to drive it to New York this weekend; is it going to blow up on me?" And he said, "Only if you drive it in first the whole way." Did they tell you it was imperative to replace the gearbox? Like yours, mine drives and shifts perfectly.
The car is Porsche certified, so presumably it would be warranted.

Yes, my tech said exactly the same and that was back in April when I had done 27k. He said it doesn;t sound right but then it will may very well last the life of the car. Since then my car has done another 5k and its still the same. It may very well be that the noise was there before for a long time (I have had thecar since new) but I never noticed it until it was pointed out to me last service.
The issue of the new gerabox is simple. Personally I am happy with it as it is and I have a good feeling that the gearbox will last 100k. But it is noted on the PUK computer service history as a "whining gearbox in first gear". This is a niggly problem and it needs to be cleared up if I ever want to sell the car (and I may be looking into another very soon). Let's face it would you by a 996 with a note saying "whining gearbox"?
So, it's only just out of warranty and that's why I pushed to get it done under their good-will scheme. I succeeded. But I only got the news today and I have to pay 30% towards cost. A new gearbox fitted is about 10 large here in the UK! So it's still goiong to cost me 3k but its peace of mind ;-)
If your going to keep your car. Don't worry about it. If it's under warranty then I would push to have it fixed (replaced :-)

Said it can stay worn and he has seen older 911s with 100k+ still with
that noise.
Just had my C4 back from Porsche with new gearbox after complaining about a vibration, which was especially evident when i had loose coins in the ash tray. Something about the syncromesh being worn out on the 1st to second cogs. Luckily it was under warranty
Hmmm ... that was a vibration when the car was in gear, but not a whine?
Earlier 915 and G50 911s were known for rattling gears at idle, but I've never heard a whine like this before.

This might blow all of your minds but here it goes. I had a little vibration/hiss that came from the gear shift area and was driving me nuts. Also variable with speed. Also sounding very "mechanic" in nature. I then realized what it was:
I happen to put coins in the ashtray of my car. A lot of them so they ended up not "jingling loudly" (which would have helped me realize what was up from the get go) but instead just a steady soft vibration whose sound just projected to the shifter.
Once I took the coins out. No noise.
Not saying your issue is this but worth try.
my 'box made a similar whine before it let go. there was little warning or time to have it looked at from when the noise began to when it finally quit. my guess, based on other cars, is that your syncros might be having trouble...but i'm no expert
If you do end up requiring a new gearbox , get Porsche to replace the RMS and advise you on how much clutch life you have left. its much cheaper to have these to items replaced when the gearbox is out as there is minimal labour cost involved.
