Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My understanding is that the Mann filter i am using has NO bypass.
Leading evidence: 'Use has no bypass' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect mag drain plug, ln spin' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

when i cut it open on the next oil change i will verify it.

Suggestion
I have the magnetic drain plug, switched to Joe Gibbs DT40 oil, change oil and examine filter every 6 months.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For those who haven't seen this in person, figured I would post some pictures. Put this in yesterday with the magnetic drain plug. They are having a sale on this now.
Magnetic drain plug is the black one, the magnetic piece is the silver piece in the middle. It's a strong magnet.
Here is the old filter and housing, I am not really sure why 100% of the oil DOES NOT go through the filter media, maybe it can get bypassed at the bottom of the filter? Anyone? Bueller?
Here is the comparison of new vs. old, as you can see, the overall lengths are the same.
You just screw it in where the housing would screw in and then screw the filter onto it. Super simple, super nicely machined part. 100% of the oil goes through the filter on this unit. Napa replacement filter. Not bad.
Did you get filter cutter yet so you can see the inside of the spin on filter the next time? By the way I don't think you have to be stressed out to go through the microscope scene. Part of the fun of owning a car or bike for some is the maintenance and the desire to understand exactly whats going on. Whats extreme for some of us is not for others.
That's the primary reason I haven't switched over to the spin on filter. I have the magnetic drain plug, switched to Joe Gibbs DT40 oil, change oil and examine filter every 6 months. But cutting open that spin on filter looks like such a PITA.
You should not need a wrench for an oil filter. If you do, you're doing something wrong.
The torque requirement for them is basically hand tight. A non stick pad/towel should be all you need to unscrew them. That being said, there are tools if they do get stuck. I've got one of
these
these
that I use on my motorcycles.
I read somewhere on this forum that there is a bypass in the bottom of the stock filter housing. So on start up, any stuff that has collected in the bottom of the housing can get pushed through. Apparently it bypasses on initial startup with the cold thick oil. The LN spin on eleminates the by pass of oil.
Pull pan and inspect, mag drain plug, LN spin on and dt40. First things I did to my new to me 99 C4 with 134K that looked like the pan had never been off and has original engine.
I've read the information on LN's spin on adaptor, and I have no idea what the real advantage is. Spin on filters still have a bypass valve, so the claim that 100% of the oil is filtered is not true. Just like the factory unit, the oil is 100% filtered when the bypass is not in effect, otherwise, both the factory unit and a spin on filter allow unfiltered oil through.
My only thought is that the spin on filters have a better bypass design than the factory filter.
I think its a matter of
when
the bypass occurs. With the LN its only in the most extreme condition, where the stock one has a lower threshold that deteriorates over time
My understanding is that the Mann filter i am using has NO bypass. It looked that the filter and could not see where there might be a bypass. when i cut it open on the next oil change i will verify it.
