I think more and more, you'll see used cars with substandard replacement parts and substandard repairs due to the low cost of entry as you invite all the cheapos that barely scrape together money to buy one but don't have enough to maintain one properly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I am heading down to Las Vegas this Saturday to pick up the '03 996 I just bought. I have all service and maintenance records for the car, and it is in impeccable condition. I have spoken to the dealership where this collector has his service done, and they have told me that the car is beautiful and is in excellent mechanical condition. The car is currently at the dealer getting a new flywheel and I'm having them do an LN IMSB since they're so far in the engine/trans. The dealer has told me that they will give me a condition report for the breaks and suspension components. I guess my question is, do I need to do a separate PPI even with all of this going on? The dealer essentially has the car pulled apart to do all this work, and they're going to give me the condition reports for brakes/suspension. What do you guys think?

POST 2Original post

You say you 'just bought'... I don't see the point of a PPI AFTER you already bought the car. Putting the cart before the horse move.

POST 3Original post

Congrats on your purchase ! Post pictures. Looks like you did your research in advance and have records too. As these cars get sold often maintenance records are lost. A PPI after is still ok as it can identify items that need to be covered under the buying warranty period. Most dealers give 30 days or such. Tell us more about the car. Color options etc.

POST 4Original post

If it's at a dealer and it's up on a lift, they will give you a list of anything else that might be wrong with it just to get the service business. I don't know what else is really going to be required beyond what you are already doing. The funny thing about a PPI is that this car is a Porsche, was most likely owned by somebody with money, most likely garaged and most likely not a daily driver and taken very good care of. It's a used car, it's going to have some issues that you can't find out about even with a PPI. Congrats!

LOL, I guess that would be partially dependent on if it's 1st, 2nd,3rd, etc owner and around what time frame the ownership exchanged hands. The landscape has changed quite a bit since about 5-6 years ago in the types of owners owning these cars. I think more and more, you'll see used cars with substandard replacement parts and substandard repairs due to the low cost of entry as you invite all the cheapos that barely scrape together money to buy one but don't have enough to maintain one properly. That's the way I see part of the 996 used market shifting towards at least.

I concur. My recent 996 shopping has shown that there are tons of them out there with deferred maintenance. I looked at a dealer car on consignment. They tried hard to sell the fact that it had its 60k done at the dealer. The problem is, that is what, spark plugs, filters and belts? Big deal... They replaced the plugs and didn't do the leaking tubes??? That is the owner cheaping out and the dealer having no recourse but to try and market a flawed machine. The dealer is in the market to SELL, period. Most sellers at this point are unloading a badly depreciated vehicle that requires expensive upkeep. I would not ever count on the notion that they are all well cared for. That isn't even true of brand new ones unfortunately.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Hurdigurdiman- I "just bought" meaning I have sen a security deposit, and made the seller sign a legal document with a performance clause saying he would sell me the car for our agreed upon price. My out of the contract is that if the car is not in as advertised "impeccable" condition I am let out of the contract. To the rest of you guys- The car is truly stunning, it is forest green metallic with Savannah beige full leather interior. It also has the OEM light alloys of the period. The car is torn apart and at the dealer because the flywheel was making some noises after we made the deal, and per our contract the seller was obligated to make the necessary repairs, and he did so without hesitation. I lucked out because I am having them do the IMS since I will only have to cover parts and one hour of labor. In that sense my car was both a blessing and a curse, the gentleman is the second owner since 2009, put a brand new clutch in, and only drove the car 3,000 miles over the course of his ownership. It was a garage queen, but with all service done to keep it up to date and in perfect condition over the 5 years. I knew that this setup put me in the high risk category for IMSB failure, so I was adamant about doing it.

POST 8Original post

I basically did what you did in buying mine. I took it to a Porsche dealer and had them inspect it so that it would qualify for an aftermarket service contract from Easy Care...which they also sold me. I then had them do what we both agreed was prudent service to fill in gaps in the service history. I am the fourth owner, they only serviced the car for the second owner. I am very happy and enjoy driving it everyday. It is an 03, like yours...and every 11 year old car will have things that break and need to be fixed...but I'm betting you will have a lot of fun.

POST 9Original post

Gaudin Porsche in Las Vegas did the PPI on my 996. It was a private party purchase, but I insisted that the seller drop the car to them. They were terrific to me and provided a detailed PPI report which I shared with my Indy upon my return to SD. Overall a great experience.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

John- I think I will as well, I just want to have all of my bases covered, especially if I decide to invest in a service contract. Bubrubb- Gaudin is the dealer with the car now, and they have serviced the car its whole life. Unfortunately they no longer officially do "PPI's" which was disappointing. They are going to of course tell me if they find anything else wrong, and I asked them to look at the age and wear of the suspension components, for that is what I am most worried about at this point.

Right on. Good luck with everything. I still remember mine coming around the corner at Gaudin. It was the first time I saw it in person. I still get butterflies.
