Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought it with 30k miles on the clock and I now have 33k miles. What are the maintenance issues (if any) I need to be aware of? I've read that there are some engine issues with these cars? Is this common or just isolated? Are there timing belt/chain issues? What's the change interval? How long until a tune-up is needed? Any tranny issues to be aware of? Are there any common issues with these cars such as oil leaks, items that go out regularly or items that tend to give you problems? Just looking for some insight and knowledge so I know where I stand. TIA!

POST 2Original post

I recently sold my 99 C2. it was bulletproof. No RMS (rear main seal) problem, no tranny problems, etc. I kept it maintained based on the service book recommendations. Timing chain is used but I doubt that you have to worry about that for quite some time if ever. Typical problems did occur and fell under one or more of the following categories: 1- Oil consumption (about 1 litre every 2000km, or 1 qt. every 1200 miles). I was told this is normal 2- Noisy interior creaks and rattles (fixed and some reappeared over time, get used to it) 3- Front upper bearings wore out. These are cheap bearing assemblies at the top of the front shocks but it doesn't surprise me since I ran coilovers in the car 4- Common recalls such as rust on engine cover (if metal with motorized spoiler), engine coolant resevior cracked, leaking, etc, fuel gauge incorrect I had no major issues and even drove it through one of Toronto's harshest winters last year. Enjoy it and start modding!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Other than the strut bearings, I think I bought your old car! Mine has all those things you mentioned. The one rattle that is driving me insane is someplace on the drivers door or b-pillar arear. Right at the top of the door. Maybe the lock is the cause? Haven't been able to locate it simply because I am driving (obviously) when it makes the noise. But to be fair, my car didn't have any rattles at all when I bought it. I just live and work where there are some F'd up roads!

POST 4Original post

Nothing that you should replace before it breaks... Normal oil change and read the the book

POST 5Original post

Hey NickS, I sold my car to a friend but many have these issues. I did the following: 1- Fuel gauge problem- sending unit was replaced by the dealer and it didn't solve it. They ended up replacing the whole guage cluster. 2- Roof Rattles- a) complete sunroof mechanism was replaced but didn't solve the problem (dealer blamed coilovers) and I finally fixed it myself by removing the sunroof panel headliner and padding in there with that Porsche felt tape (it's still not perfect) 3) Iterior Rattles- a) dashboard trim (along the windsheild) was removed and felt tape placed between trim and dash b) instrument cluster was removed and felt tape (can you see a trend here?) installed c) passenger side air bag (dealer couldn't figure it out) I removed the airbag cover and installed felt tape on the adjoining surfaces d) rear quarter windows were removed and noise was isolated by using the felt tape on the surfaces where the glasss mounting bolts hit metal (this is prbably your noise in the B Pillar) e) front and rear windows had the Porsche "white cord" insulator installed with a ton of white lithium grease (works for six months) f) rear wing (older GT3 wing) rattled over bumps and the dealer replaced the little rubber washers that go in between the moveable part of the wing and its base Like I said, I never had that RMS problem but all of the other things were done.

POST 6Original post

The car is scheduled to have a major service appointment at 30k miles - has this been done yet? Mine has been pretty good, but at my 30k service, I got my RMS replaced and a wheel baring done under warranty - good things to check. Other minor things were the same as everyone elses. If you go in for the 30k, make sure to watch out for your MAF failing soon after - seems to be a fairly common problem (see my earlier post). Maybe you can get the dealer to verify the integrity of the MAF before they start doing the 30k and if there are problems afterwards, you can point to them. Enjoy.

POST 10Original post

MAF = Mass Airflow Senor = $500 installed at the dealer. As I understand it, the sensor regulates the air and gas flow into the engine for proper combustion.

POST 11Original post

Thanks BSC...... I'm at 60k + but got the car used and haven't had this issue..... YET.
