I had my 2002 C4S in for service today..Got a call from the Porsche service advisor - The Rear Main seal will need to be replaced as it's leaking slightly (no oil spots on my garage floor). It will be covered under warranty. I am concerned that it will occur again. Will they be fitting an updated seal ? ThunderC4S 2002 Arctic Silver C4S

Porsche has redesigned the oil seal, the installation tools and re-trained the dealers on proper replacement of the RMS. According to a recent TSB (Technical Support Bulletin) Porsche dealers are now supposed to perform a test prior to replacing the oil seal. The test involves checking the mating surface for the seal. If the fit of the special tool is not tight enough... you get a new engine.

We had a tech session in April at our local Porsche dealer and the new tools for RMS repairs were explained. I did a report on another board. <a href="http://www.renntech.org/index.php?act=ST&f=25&t=15&s=37fa1b86ea34129c4f06a76efcc92d8f" target="_blank">RMS</a> Once the old seal is removed a Go-No-Go fixture is placed over the end of the crank into the bore for the seal. Update - The car is back at the dealer again after the RMS was replaced just after a couple of months. I think it's new engine time...I am thinking about paying extra for a X51 engine instead. I also have a small coolant leak fron the front right hand side radiator (just in front of the wheel area).. ThunderC4S

Whether you go ahead or not, can you post what the dealer/service say? Is it possible? Why not go farther and have a GT3 engine placed? 385 HP, man! Can it be done, I wonder.
