Independent stores and used departments of other car marques do sell them for $90K - $96K.
Leading evidence: 'Use departments of other car marques do sell them' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'extra load of more power' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace without notice' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

After 25,000 miles, the tranny was sounding clunky - maybe it was just the fact that it was an Audi, but I think it was the extra load of more power from the ECU.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I saw a 2001 Turbo -- very nice M. Blue with natural interior -- 7K miles -- only thing was it was an auto trans.
I was not thinking of getting a turbo or an auto -- BUT -- this was a very nice car - perfect condition they want 96K plus certification cost.
What do people think! how many auto turbo's are even sold -- anything special to know about the 01 turbo. Can the transmission handle all that power!!
I thank all for the input - will update
The price depends on if you are buying from a dealer or private party. From what I've seen, dealers can command around a $5K premium over private parties for comparably equipped vehicles.
The price of $96K may be high or it may be spot on, depending on equipment and vehicle condition. To give you an idea, 2001 Turbos that had an original MSRP of around $130K (around $16K worth of options) are selling at dealers for $95K - $100K.
Many people on the board would have you believe that every turbo for sale is in the 80's, which just isn't true. EVERY single turbo I've seen for sale that is under $90K has either very few or no options, relatively high miles, or has some kind of "history" to it.
I just simply don't believe that you can get a well optioned, low mile, no story Turbo for under $92K - $95K.
BTW, I have the tiptronic and it works just great. The only thing you have to look out for is that you can't do too many mods to a car with a tiptronic without doing some beefing up of the tranny.
I don't know how well the stock TIP can handle more than just a simple ECU upgrade. For example, my Audi 2.7T had the tiptronic, and I decided to chip it at around 1,500 miles. After 25,000 miles, the tranny was sounding clunky - maybe it was just the fact that it was an Audi, but I think it was the extra load of more power from the ECU.
Thanks all for the help
The car is at a dealer - the certification costs are those the dealer pays to Porsche to add the car to the program - this is a must for me because I want a Warranty for more than a one year.
I am going to stop in and see what the build sheet says on the hood -- I hope it is in the same place on a turbo -- I was so excited to see this car because of the colors that I did not think it all out at the time. I had one of those male brain moments -- the kind that always get you into trouble.
I was also thinking this morning that I will be seeing more and more of these car now as the leases run out -- so I should not concern myself.
I was just surprised to some extent the very large depreciation hit that Porches take. Even though I tend to keep my cars I still have had to get used to the big hit.
Do not believe for 1 second that options raise the price of a car. They will not give you a cent on trade-in for options. Even the X50 turbo option which actually has some value, costs $18k as a new option and only brings $3-5k in resale. Dealers will have you believe that a car is worth more becuase of options and they are not. Call around to dealers, tell them you car listed for $20k over base and see what price you get. Then call and say your car just had a couple options and see what price you will get. I will tell you, the value will be very close if not exactly the same.
Do not pay over $90k for a 2001 TT. The price as previously stated is $85-90k for a perfect example. At $96k, that is a bad deal, that is the proper price for an 02 which gives you 1 more yr warranty, better interest rates, and a couple of small improvements over the 01. Good luck.

LSM, I have agreed with you many times in the past (even if I didn't post anything saying so) but I must disagree with you on this point. Perhaps some of the difference is the market adjustment between IL and CA, but all of the Porsche Factory Authorized Dealers in So Cal are selling 2001 turbos for around $94K - $99K. Rarely if ever can you find one for less than $94K at a factory dealer here.
That is to say - they start out asking $99K-$110K and discount them to the mid-high 90's. And perhaps lots of options do not change the price of the car at trade in, but they do seem to have quite an effect when the dealer sells the car back to the public.
Again the keyword is Factory Authorized Dealer. Independent stores and used departments of other car marques do sell them for $90K - $96K.
Trojan,
I see your point, most are probably private sellers or not authorized Porsche dealers. Some are though. Don't know how great this will turn out but below are my results, some cars from authorized dealers asking high 80's, low 90's. If this does not come out, go to
www.cars.com.
Search used car inventory, select Porsche, select 911, select minimum amount $75k, sort results by year by clicking on "year" on top of search results. Good luck.
**You will notice, if some of these private party sales are asking $80-83k, think what do you think wholesale value is?? They must have been offered like $75k on trade. I am right on with wholesale for a 2001 ~$77k. Porsche dealers are greedy, they want to make $15k on the deal.

Here is the best buy I found on a Turbo. Obviously this is asking price, prior to any negotiation. If dealer wholesale was more, he wouldn't be asking $82k.
