Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had to back up and get out of the car and check my rim which seems fine unbelievably and look at the hole which was 2+ inches deep.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hit a recessed 8" dia. hole for the gas company just as I came to a stop and it felt like I didn't have a tire on the rim it hit SO hard. I had to back up and get out of the car and check my rim which seems fine unbelievably and look at the hole which was 2+ inches deep. Just what can our cars withstand? Because it sure feels like they are getting the crap pounded out of them. Now wondering if my perfectly aligned front end is no longer.

POST 2Original post

maybe the wheel is bended already just u can't see it!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I brought it up to 90mph and watched the wheel for pull and vibration. Nothing.

POST 4Original post

Hard to say exactly, but I can tell you that the roads here in the boston area are terrible. I hit pot holes all the time!! But I have never bent a rim on the pot holes. I have been lucky and haven't hit any square-on at real high speed, but I have hit plenty square-on at 30 mph or so, and lots and lots of little {like 3" high} bumps, rocks, bridge expansion joints, etc. at highway speeds {ie 85-90}. On the track I did bend a rim going off under full power {and drift} at about 90mph. I hit the turtle with all 4 but only the load bearing {outside rear wheel} bent. Bend was repairable, but gave a very noticable shimmy in the seat of the pants before the repair. Here, see for yourself what this looked like: www.trackoutdesign.com/pete/996_Off_Road.wmv

POST 5Original post

I've bent my 18" front wheel on my old '98 C4S by hitting a pothole at regular city speed. I couldn't tell that it was bent while driving, but on a balance machine you could see the wobble.

POST 7Original post

What does this have to do with 996 duribility??? Road hazards have nothing to do with durability!

POST 10Original post

As durable as any modern car. I'd be more concerned with the number of RMS and other terminal engine problems which have led to some engine replacements. I'm guessing the suspension and body components are much more durable than the mechanicals. Just a guess, however.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats what I'm wondering. Even though they ride hard and it feels like it's doing damage... Is it really?

POST 12Original post

I have DRILLED a few potholes and never damaged a rim. It's quite amazing how strong the Porsche rims are. It's still a horrible feeling, but it's impossible to miss all the holes on our sh!tty roads

POST 13Original post

I've bent rims on my Audi A6 and BMW 850CSI, but never on my Porsches (have had 5 in 23 years). Also banged the front end on my 850 hard enough to bust a shock. I'm kind of wondering if the lower front weight might have something to do with it. The older series were all very durable throughout, and my tt feels no less sturdy than those (except for the pillarless doors). AS
