IOW, something I can take on the group mountain drives without worrying about the excessive chips I get on them (just replaced my windshiled on the C2 - can you imagine the cost on a CGT for that!, and have numerous rock chips on the front of the car - something that if present on the CGT could result in 6 figure depreciation).

As has been proffered already, you've got to ultimately go in the direction that you feel will keep you happiest (of course that litmus test tends to evolve each model year for many of us).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hypothetical scene A: You want a new Porsche. You get on a list and can get a 996 Turbo Cab at MSRP, maybe a buck off at best. You realize there could be a new model around the corner, and you really don't want to get nailed on the drop in value, therefore you think the Turbo Cab might hold value better. So you go for it. The new model (997) rolls out, you like it, and decide it's for you, and you are on a list for that too. So you sell the Turbo Cab and pick up a new 997 C2 Cab or similar, and hope that you come out ok on the Turbo Cab even though it's now an 'old' model style. Or... Hypothetical Scene B: You bite your tongue and hold back on purchasing the Turbo Cab altogether, then hope and pray a new model does show up and just buy that instead. In both cases, this is a daily driver in city traffic (mild) with occasional jaunts on the highway. Of course, it's all hypothetical, you know. . . (where's my wife, Morgan Fairchild?).... Oh yeah, and does anyone care to speculate the Turbo Cab might actually be worth more than MSRP after purchased? OK, let it fly.

POST 2Original post

Why wait? If you wait and buy the new model, there will always be a newer model following it a couple years later, and you'll have an early (before the bugs are worked out) 997. A car like this is a luxury, and will cost you either way. So, get it and start enjoying ASAP.

POST 3Original post

Or "C"...you bite the bullet and hold on to your Cab for the next 2.5 years, make some great investments, and buy a C-GT!

POST 4Original post

"A" if you got the money to spend, cause I wouldn't count on TTcab re-sale being much better than current 996 line-up specially after the 997 rools out.

POST 5Original post

I think it would be silly to wait. The new model may not be what you like, or may not be worth waiting for, and you would have deprived yourself needlessly all that time. OTOH, I also think it is silly to buy something now if you expect to be selling it in the very near future because you will be unahppy when the new model comes out.. I would buy the car now, and be happy with it regardless of what comes in the next few years. Otherwise, you might as well postpone buying the car each year forever, because each year the cars get better or different than the cars the year before.

POST 6Original post

"Or "C"...you bite the bullet and hold on to your Cab for the next 2.5 years, make some great investments, and buy a C-GT!" I'm going thru a similar quandry. Originally I too was trying to figure out whether to keep my C2 cab (and maybe even SC it) or get a TT cab. Turns out in the interim I bought a CGT (8/04) build which has really muddied up things. The TT cab is totally poseur (3650+ lbs) without a decent chunk of change being spent to up the power and substantially lighten it. Like you Eric, I'm coming from a C2 and have to tell you the feel of the AWD doesn't exactly excite me. The C2 is heart pounding in the twisties while the TT is heart pounding in the straights. Then you have the 997 around the corner which no one in the right mind would want the first year of anyway. "If" I hadn't bought the CGT, I'd probably go ahead and get the TT cab (which incidentally might not do so hot on resale if they decide to roll out the TT cab as a normal model with the 997 TT), and wait to buy the 2nd year of the 997 cab if I hadn't found a way to live with the AWD feeling. (To muddy up the waters for me personally, I recently bought my wife an M3 coupe which she will quickly outgrow if babies in up on the horizon - hopefully next year). So, if I was in your position, I'd buy the TT cab, and trade it for a 997 cab upon model year #2 if you don't like the TT cab or simply like the 997 cab better. Also, I've not leased a car since 1994 (until this M3), but think I will go that route on all but the CGT in the future since your max depreciation is known at the time of purchase. In my situation, I still don't know what to do. I need a fun car (like my C2 cab or M3 coupe) that doesn't have to be a garage queen (unlike the CGT will be for me). So, I guess I'll just have to wait until one of the dealers with my TT cab deposit calls with an allocation to decide whether I stay put (and maybe even SC) or take the bait on a TT cab.

POST 7Original post

Eric: I would go with plan A. Go for the '04 TT cab. MSRP less a little is probably the best you can get early on. (Have you seen our local dealer's plug on the Autospies site ?) This assumes you will stay in the car for a while, as you have with your '99 cab. I think you would get hit hard with the spread if you were to trade for a 997 any time soon. The other posts are right; you never know until you see the new model whether you will want it over the TT cab. I came out of an M roadster into a C4S, and I like the feel of the AWD. Different, yes. But awesome in the mountains. (Have you ever driven NC 9 from Bat Cave to Black Mountain ?) Good Luck. Tom

POST 8Original post

Eric --- Consider the choices that you're pondering here. Just the mere fact that you have these options on the table in front of you is awesome! A dream for the majority of drivers out there. As has been proffered already, you've got to ultimately go in the direction that you feel will keep you happiest (of course that litmus test tends to evolve each model year for many of us). If presented w/ this decision, I'd vote for A. Who the heck knows what next week is going to bring, much less next year, so you might as well have the near-term satisfaction of possessing that beautiful commodity known as the '04 996 Turbo Cab. How can you really go wrong? fwiw, Jeff
