didn't something just change on these warranties??

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm planning to buy a '99 996. I live in Michigan so I have to decide on a C4 or C2. How do the c2's drive in the snow? With or without snow tires? What would you recommend? Also, any advice on what to look for when buying a used 996? Any problems to look for? Thanks in advance. Pat
I am also considering a 996 and there is a lot of information on this site. Use the "Search" feature, start with the 996 Forum section, and enter your search words ( "1999 problems" is a good one to begin with).
The problems with the 1999 model year are listed in detail. If you do your research you will be properly informed when you make queries on candidate cars.
There should be plenty of discussion in the archives on two wheel drive versus four wheel drive. You should give plenty of thought to all of your driving needs; street, track, autocross, daily driver all year round, fair weather driving only, and so forth.
My 99 C2 is SUICIDAL in the snow with oem tires. I drive it all year round, every day to work, rain or shine but after getting caught in the snow once, I NEVER drive it if there is snow on the road or in the forcast. I've been told that with snow tires the C2s do quite well. But here on Long Island, there are not enough snow-days to justify the tires and I do have an alternate vehicle to drive in those conditions.
The C4 with snows seems the logical choice if snow-driving is an important issue.
If you are going to (try to) drive year round, you would be better served by a C4. However, realize that depending on what part of MI, this is probably not pratical in a tough Michigan winter.
There are snow tire options and people have posted some positive feedback on them.
My opinion -- snow tires on a 996 are like high performance summer tires on a Grand Cherokee...sure they will work but only so well.
If you want the best all around car for MI, I would go for a C4 first and C2 second but short of planning to drive in snow it probably doesnt make that much difference.
With either choice, I would encourage you to get the 17" wheels (rather than 18") to manage the roads, weather conditions, etc. You will get better winter performance, less harsh ride on really cold days, tires are cheaper and snow tires are readily available.
Traction control, which was an option on the 99 C2, is OK, but won't give you any real benefits in the snow (my opinion).
Path,
C4 with snow tires!!! Won't be a problem at all. C2 without snow tires is a death wish... CarreraMark raises a good pt tho, if you have 18s on the car, get a second set of 17s with snow tires on them.
As far as 99s go, you will be buying a car w/o a factory warranty, which is something to consider. There were some option differences, but for the most part all the bugs for MY99 will have been ironed out.
Good luck!!!
i'm considering/starting to poke around about 996s, and i could be wrong, but if you buy a 'certified' 99 from a dealer, isn't there some sort of warranty now? didn't something just change on these warranties??
i'm being vague, i know.....

Yes, Porsche's new extended warranty program just started in June. I just bought a 1999 996 C4 and paid a bit more to get the extended warranty. It offers 2 yrs./100K miles (whichever comes first!) for cars such as mine that had just ended their original 4-yr. warranty. According to the warranty info. from Porsche, this new program is available to cars that are no older than 8 years from the original in-service date, and it excludes Carrera GT.
