Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was lucky and got all the labor comped because my rear main seal was being replaced under warranty at the same time, but I was told it was a two day $1000 labor job.
Leading evidence: 'Replace under warranty at the same time' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace under warranty at the same time' (1 discussions). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What is the Average life of the clutch on 996 and how much is it too replace it?
I am just wondering seeing how tough I am on the clutch. (maybe I should take it easy and not enjoy my car as much????)
Peter
I just had mine replaced at 33k miles (not sure if/when the previous owner did anything). The clutch itself is $650 through the dealer ($450 if you order the kit on the web), but installation is the killer. I was lucky and got all the labor comped because my rear main seal was being replaced under warranty at the same time, but I was told it was a two day $1000 labor job.
I am doing mine presently. I am after the hydrolic assist point. Meaning the disc is worn down enough that there is no assist. It doesn't slip however but I am awaiting putting in the new fvd lightened flywheel and clutch kit which came in last week and I should pick up today and have installed in the next week depending on appointment. My assist started at about 32k I am at 38k now. It lets out pretty high and makes it a pain to be smooth but whatever. I can't wait to have a buttery clutch again!
Replaced mine @ 39k miles, $1100 installed. I thought that was amazingly low miles, I've never replaced a clutch below 100k miles on a car before (except a VW Scirroco that I burnt out a clutch on an autotest when in college
.
My car did have 6k miles on it when I bought it, so I'll see how long this one lasts.
Replacing at less than 40,000 miles... are these clutches that weak that they wear out that fast?
On my last manual car (94 BMW 325is) the clutch was holding fine after 55,000 miles. That was the car I learned the finer points of clutch control on and it suffered more abuse in the hills of TN than I care to remember.
I have no idea how long my 996 clutch will make it, but I'm sure the numbers vary greatly by driver. Some people just don't get how to make one last.
The only car I've had long enough to know was an '89 Mustang GT (5.0). My clutch was original until my Dad wrecked it at 115,000 miles.
Clutch life is similar to human life expectancy ... Some people work out every day and die young while some heavy smokers are puffing away on filterless cigs at 95 years old!
Still, 30K miles for a clutch is low... I would have thought they would last more...
This is a good thing to know for those that are looking into buying a second hand car... better plan for a clutch job and discount the car based on that.
i have 41K miles on the original clutch, which has surprised me based on what i've always heard about these ****ty clutches. i have no idea how long its going to last but last week it was at the dealer and they said the clutch was fine. you'd think porsche, with their knack for cutting edge brake technology, would put a more decent clutch in the car.
Could it be the low clutch life is do to the way these cars driven, and not to the quality or perceived lack thereof?
You would drive a sedan more sedately than a Porsche. Constant hard starts are bound to have an effect on the clutch.
My 1990 C4 had 96000mi and was still on it's original clutch. It was not driven hard, never tracked etc...
It's definitley how the car is driven. I bought mine used and I did eat a little getting used to it but after that the engagement was the same worked! I have spoken to a few owners and mechanics and they have all said that 30k is normal for them to see it at.
