So this morning I'm searching for my key to drive to the coffee shop. After looking for quite a while I remember I came home Sunday afternoon from an auto-x and haven't driven my car since. And of course the pants I wore that day are LONG gone into the hamper. You guessed it...I found the key in the dryer clean as a whistle. Well I'm glad to report it worked just fine... My question is should I be worried about some sort of immeninent "failure" since the insides have probably been completely soaked? Should I be proactive and switch to my backup and get another one so I'm not stranded one night when the thing "shorts out" and the car won't start? TIA

Take it apart, following the instructions in the owner's manual for changing the battery. Make sure it's all dry. I had a cordless phone once that got submerged while in use, and it worked for years after it was dry. And even this notebook computer I'm using has been completely soaked in coffee. It took two days to dry out, but it works fine. I don't think you have to worry about being stranded, you can always open the door with the key and the PATS chip is pretty well sealed up inside.
