Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check e500 weight is around 3850lbs' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'e55 can smoke the 996' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check e500 weight is around 3850lbs' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

R&T just clocked 0-100mph in 9.8 seconds for the E-55, versus 12.2 seconds the last time they tested a 3.6L C2.

Suspected cause
Probably the E55 can smoke the 996 after 120mph when all the gears are used up and its nothing but upper end power.

or more, AMG had to replace an aluminum subframe with steel to withstand the torque, along with all the other porking up that goes with big power.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I was driving home (3 am empty streets) and some guy in a 2003 white E55 pulls up next to me and gives me a look. Light turns green and he couldn't over take me
So much for the extra 180 HP
Well savor the flavor, if that was an '03 it can beat a Carrera 0-to-100mph by more than 2 seconds--there is NO substitute for cubic inches.
Don't try that for money.
i think he is referring to a 03 considering he said 180+hp compared to the carrera.
They both 1/4 at 13's, if he's a good driver, good launch the carrera can still give it a good run.
i do think the e55 is one of the best 4 doors out there.
I would agree that the new e55 should stomp you! Those things are seriously BAD!! They look all nice and innocent and then they drop it and it sounds so sick! Sorry but I still have affection for AMG as I used to own a c43 AMG- previous car, and I miss many things about it. Would I go back to it? 50/50, would I trade my 996 for a new e55, uh yeah! but I live in the city so I have been feeling the pain!
The thing that is sick is that the new S600 is even quicker with that Maybach engine, and for drags the Mercs can just leave the traction control on and auto shift. On paper even a GT-3 should lose most of the time, you will still want a road with some turns.
Or pop for a TT, check the new R&T! And you get IMO the best looking 996 wing for "free."
Why conclude anything? Street racing isn't racing.
How do you know that you started at the same time, that the other guy nailed the throttle to get his key downshift, or how much risk you both were willing to take in losing your license, killing yourself, or a pedestrian?
Both of the parties are stupid, and the winner is the one who takes the most risks- not the fastest car or the best driving skills. Just my opinion. AS
Didn't he say "3am empty streets"?
Whats the risk of going WOT throttle at a stoplight?
If at all you could say, "straight-line racing isn't racing" in which case I would agree. It doesn't say anything about the car's sporting performance or driver's skills, and its not at what 911 excell at precisely...
Personally if some guy in an automatic heavy sedan gives me the look at a stoplight I'm not wasting my rubber just to have to brake a few hundred meters again, not unless there is some twisty open road ahead.
Thanks for the moral input alex, I feel like a better person already.
I was not 'concluding' anything, i was just expeting a car with 500 HP to pass me like I wasn't moving.

BTW according to Autocar Keyvan's 3.6l 996 will beat the E55 in 0-100mph by 0.3 secs, thats what a torque converter and 1760Kg does to the 476HP-V8's acceleration, I'm not critisizing the E55 (one of my favorite sedans until the new 500-550HP M5 comes out) its just that its no sportcar nor is it meant to be, just that some buyers don't know that.
how heavy is the e55 anyway? surely hp per pound its not even close to a 996 and plus the auto doesn't let you get a good of a launch.
I checked the E500 weight is around 3850lbs. and dunno if the E55 is heavy or heavier.
Probably the E55 can smoke the 996 after 120mph when all the gears are used up and its nothing but upper end power.
The traction control usually infact slows down the car from take off, as part of traction control weakens the engine for grip.
The E-55 weighs 4200lbs. or more, AMG had to replace an aluminum subframe with steel to withstand the torque, along with all the other porking up that goes with big power. What's that line? "Looks like a fish, moves like a fish, turns like a...cow"
R&T just clocked 0-100mph in 9.8 seconds for the E-55, versus 12.2 seconds the last time they tested a 3.6L C2. That is not close, nor should it be with the Merc effectively having a 7-8L engine. They even did that E-55 time with the T/C switched on, couldn't get the power down any other way.
You can safely assume it would be slower with a stick. You can also be sure the 911 time was more mechanically abusive.
lol...speaking of all that power, the amg55 motors are so strong if you jump on the gas 75% from dead stop you can't help chirp the tires and get attention.
I driven the sl55 a few times and you can never enjoy the pull without at least 1/2 straight road with no cars ahead of you. It just keeps on pulling once you stomp on the egas
Fellas, Fellas-
Easy now- I have one of each, and they are dramatically different automobiles. The E55 is easily the most competent sedan out there, i.e. fast, luxurious, comfortable, and is scary fast in a straight line, with brakes to match- a genuine wolf in sheeps' clothing. Handles pretty well with the suspension control dialed in all the way firm too, but is no 996. Bottom line- E55, even at 4200 lbs., is faster in straight acceleration than 996 (honest), and just wants to keep pulling. First time the road bends, though, put me back in my Carrera. The E55 is a great daily driver, Carrera is the one for serious driving. Two very different and terrific autos. My 2 cents.
