Since getting the car I had the front bumper resprayed because the rock chips where driving me crazy, installed clear side markers and put on Fabspeed Chrome Exhaust Tips.

My only advice is change the oil fairly often along with the filter, add a magnetic drain plug and you'll be fine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bought my first Porsche a couple of weeks ago from a friend of mine and I really love it. Its a 2002 with 106,000 miles. I normally would NEVER even consider a car with more than 30,000 miles but I liked it and I was getting a great deal. I paid $12,000 cash plus a few barter items. For that I received a PORSCHE, two keys and a stack of receipts. Did I mention a PORSCHE! He also took the wheels off his new 4s and put them on this car along with new tires. Since getting the car I had the front bumper resprayed because the rock chips where driving me crazy, installed clear side markers and put on Fabspeed Chrome Exhaust Tips. I also just ordered a new air and cabin filter from K&N. As I write this I have had detailers at my house for the last six hours working on the interior re dyeing the leather and most of the trim pieces. After that they are doing a complete outside detail, clay barring, buffing, waxing and polishing all the chrome. I'm kind of a nut for detail. I'm also addicted to mods so ANY suggestions would be appreciated. I also ask a ton of questions so be prepared. I was driving around last night and found this great little spot by my house to take some pictures so here they are...

POST 3Original post

That's a beauty! Congratulations on a great deal and welcome As for mods it's a slippery slope. May I suggest starting out with a LED Interior Kit, for more information Click Here . Enjoy, you really got a great looking car.

POST 4Original post

Looks gorgeous. Wish I had friends like yours.

POST 6Original post

I'm a little surprised that the 4S wheels fit. I thought they were a much lower offset. Great looking car, and welcome!

POST 7Original post

Congratulations and welcome aboard. Your car looks absolutely gorgeous. Drive it hard, maintain it, and it will last forever. I am on my second 996 and they are the most dependable cars that I have ever owned. See my signature for a list of mods to consider. My two favorites are nice mufflers and a cold air induction system. The sound produced by both is amazing. You can find great deals on used parts here. You already started with those nice Fabspeed tips. They make nice mufflers and their carbon fiber cold air induction system looks beautiful. Have fun!

POST 8Original post

Welcome! You got a hell of a deal on that car. Enjoy!

I have them on my C4S, and on the C4S the rear require a 17mm spacer for them to fit flush.

POST 11Original post

Nice ride! How much did the detail job set you back? My only advice is change the oil fairly often along with the filter, add a magnetic drain plug and you'll be fine. Do cut the filter open and inspect it. If you see too much metal flakes take action. 2002 Turbo - Basalt Black Metallic / 2003 Carrera 4S - Speed Yellow / 1955 356 Continental 1500 - Rust Red

POST 13Original post

looks like a new car/Porsche really does a great job with the paint you need to take your friend to out to dinner a lot!!! Great Deal!!!

POST 15Original post

Beautiful car!! Now i gotta get mine waxed, looking at your shine..

POST 16Original post

Gorgeous car... $12K is a steal IMHO for a well serviced/documented/clean/no issues 996, even with high miles. Looks like somebody really took care of that car. Those wheels look like narrow body Sport-techno wheels to me, which is fortunate for you. Wide body wheels would not be a good idea on a narrow body 996... If those wheels came off a wide-body car, they must have been massively shimmed as mentioned above or sitting way inside the fenders. As for mods, I'll suggest 1) a sprint-booster. I was a huge cynic and thought it couldn't possibly be as good as everyone said it was until I tried it, but it really woke up my 2004 C2. It just makes the throttle mapping so much better on the e-throttle cars! I'd also get rid of the K&N if it is an oiled filter, 996 MAF's don't seem to do well with them. And add a 2) silicon intake hose (cheap mod) to get some intake sound back. My 3) mod would be H&R springs to get rid of that huge fender gap and put the car at the ride height it should have been delivered with... Along with a GT3 alignment. You should be able to get the Sprint Booster, throttle pipe, and springs for ~$600 total and all are relatively easy to install if you can work on cars. Then maybe 4) a 997 shift console (Porsche terminology for shift mechanism) which will drop right in to the 996 and tighten up the shifting quite a bit.

POST 17Original post

Change the motor and transmission. Mounts to tighten her up. Im sure the rubber is shot after that many miles.

POST 18Original post

Wow - great looking car! The paint looks immaculate. What does the interior look like (full leather, etc)??

POST 19Original post

She's a beauty & what a deal ! An intelligent mature approach to driving along w/ following suggestions in this site for frequent filter checks should keep it healthy . Bob 01 C4 31 Ford cp chp & ch, 302/350 40 ******, 302/350, IFS 38 Ford cp, 327/350, IFS 57 Belair 62 356B --long ago
