But seems to me that a majority of the folks here are still in the honeymoon phase with their Pcars (four months for some, forever for most...) and that it would be inconceivable to REPLACE a Pcar with a subbie...

But, all things equal, there are a lot of other cars (particularly used ones) that you could trade your car against that I think would be a lot more practical AND fun than the Subaru.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Local Subaru dealer has an 08 Legacy Spec B for 6 grand off msrp. It has a 6 speed, GPS, 9 speaker 6 cd audio system, power everything. Anybody on here with a Legacy? Impressions? I have had, until recently, a 2002 WRX and I can honestly say it was the best car I have ever owned.
Engine 2.5-liter DOHC intercooled, turbocharged aluminum-alloy 16-valve 4-cylinder horizontally opposed SUBARU BOXER engine with Active Valve Control System.

SI-DRIVE Performance Management System Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) enables three distinctly different modes of vehicle performance characteristics by regulating the engine control unit (ECU), the automatic transmission control unit (if equipped), and by fine-tuning the electronically controlled throttle.
Manual Transmission Standard fully synchronized 6-speed manual

Well I totaled my daily driver, WRX, and I just don't like driving the Porsche everyday. I am paranoid that something will happen to it, and I don't need two car payments. Plus the Subaru is a bit more practical.
I have thought about that, I don't want a beater, i want something with options and technology. I don't think I will miss the Porsche too badly. To be honest, the Porsche has kind of lost its luster. Please don't kill me.
Does 6 grand actually represent the depreciation that 1 year old will represent? At least if you buy something at the beginning of the model year, you have most of a year to drive it before (in book value) it becomes a year old. Clearly, it drops as soon as you drive it off the lot -- but this adds even more (when it comes to what insurance will pay you in a claim or you try to resell). Just make sure you're not shorting yourself on how much less it's really worth.
Drive what you like.
do you expect this to maintain its "luster"
Get real, this is basic transportation at best. These cars are made of really poor materials, excellently engineered to be good transportation, cheap and light (relatively speaking)
If gadgets "do it for you" more than performance, craftsmanship and road drivability, get the Subby.... but that is a personal choice. Most of my cars have always been a little "stripped down" but serve me for what I need in a car, not in an entertainment system
Just based on what I have read (seriously no offense meant) you sound kind of young. Try not to get excited by the radio, and look for a car that you can drive with a smile.
Just my .02
WOW - after re-reading that I sounded a little harsh, sorry.... I have a freind with a subby and it's just not my kind of car at all, guess it never had any "luster" in my book.
That said they are good cars and there are times when that is what you need.
yup, Tinny is exactly how I feel...
I did look into one a few years ago and started poking around. Every part seemed about 1/2 sized, the door hinges were tiny and welded on, the roof was like tin foil, seats as thin as cardboard, carpet was like colored paper, and overall they just had no "mass" to anything.
it reminded me of one of those toy cars at the "everything under a $1" store that "LOOKS" like the regular car, but just somehow didnt have the same level of material quality as the one in the real store that cost only slightly more
(again, sorry subby owners - I know many of you love them, but if you want I can rag on Honda's too, I have a list for them as well.... oh and Toyotas, Kia, Scion, Huandai, Ford, Chrysler, and maybe a couple other brands
)
Damn this is strong coffee this AM
If you like gadgets ...get the Acura TL...lots of standard technology, more powerful than the legacy and now with the SH-AWD.
In the Legacy the few things I like are the red instrument cluster lighting and the sound of the flat-4 although they have kept it very subdued.
I looked into a Legacy GT Wagon not too long ago. Great car, really. Cobb Tuning and you have a sleeper on your hands. IIRC, it's got the STI engine (at the time it did). They're robust cars. Don't let the Porsche-files get you down.
At some point in your life, you have to make decisions that aren't the most fun. I love the porsche, but if you require something that the porsche cannot fulfill, then so be it.
The transmission, I've heard is the weaker point in this car, but I don't know much about that in detail. Good luck. Who knows, if Subaru didn't can the Wagon in 6 speed a couple of years ago, I would have the subie in the driveway as well.
As far as getting an S4??? I had one. NO THANKS. It was a great car, but the unreliability that is well known combined with a crappy dealer network has left me sour about that marque. At least with Subaru, you don't pay THAT much and then feel like the dealer is leaving you in the dry.
Is the Subby going to be a track or autocross car or just DD. For a DD it's not a bad car. I Echo the tinny feel to the car and just mention that if you're willing to buy used, the world is your oyster right now. So many unbelievable cars are available for bottom basement prices. As mentioned before, RS4's or how about an M3 (Great compromise car for performance, luxury and practicality) or a G35 just to mention a few.
Me personally, I'd keep the P car and get a Beater. I drive a 04 Grand Cherokee Limited to work and it's great for stop and go traffic here in DC. When I'm in the mood, I hope in the P car. Best of every world. You can pick up DD's for sub 10K now a days. Especially if it's an SUV.
Imdrew12 - I had an '02 WRX wagon w/Vishnu Stage 1, springs, 18" wheels, etc. That was the best car I owned - 117K miles and never had a problem. I replaced the brakes @ 90K. I always wanted a P-car so decided I deserved it. Oh, I do miss the Subbie....some days.....err....not much
I am definitely an advocate for the Subaru products and open to having another some day. I think they lost touch with the new model WRX so hopefully they get the proverbial bit between the teeth in the future and bust out a 400hp+ model.....
I'm with you.
I've had multiple new cars, throw a lot of money into mods and suspension, and always get bored of them within 2 years.
Horses for courses, I say.
The Porsche is the sports car, anything else is just transportation.
I'm another Subaru fan, if the 996 or some other more fun car didn't fit my requirements, I'd consider one again.
For some time I had a modified WRX and an M3. I did not drive either of the other cars for the last month I had them in addition to the 911. That said, if YOU no longer enjoy your Porsche, then why keep it?
A few years back I made the mistake of selling one of my Porsche's (88 951) and buying an Audi S4 because I wanted something newer, with some more technology.... it was a great car.. but I owned it a whopping year and a half or so before I sold it and replaced it with another Porsche.
buy what you need and be happy...... I like to see my P-car sitting in the driveway but to be very honest I love new cars and the 996 is a bit dated!..... it is only since a couple of weeks because my 2 yr old daughter decided she LOVES the "CAR" and doesn't seem to feel that the 08 escalade with her own personal movie theater in the back (DVD) is the "CAR" that I have been driving my P-car more.
I don't think you will regret selling your Porsche since you are not driving it much....I was thinking of selling it and only now that I have been using it more I started to appreciate it again...sound, handling etc.... until I close the top and hear all the groans and moans..but who cares driving with the top down is what it is all about anyways!
Well I just couldn't do it. They were only going to give me $20000 for the P-car and I didn't think it was worth giving up at that price, plus I have grown really attached to it. So the Porsche is now my official DD.
On the way to the dealer i had two different kids taking pictures of my car on the interstate with their cell phones. That just solidified my admiration for this car and how special it is, and how lucky I am to own one.
I don't know, i guess in my mind it would seem more reliable and a more practical choice for a daily driver, even though i have never had a problem with the Porsche.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting any car, as long as it suits your taste and needs. Everyone has different needs, tastes, budget, priorities, etc.
However.....Subarus are the most OOGLY cars in the market!!!! That is a fact! Even though I have to admit they are pretty well engineered.
I'm glad you didn't get one. The Porsche Gods were watching over you.....
++1... It's good to see that there were some well-considered responses to this question...
But seems to me that a majority of the folks here are still in the honeymoon phase with their Pcars (four months for some, forever for most...) and that it would be inconceivable to REPLACE a Pcar with a subbie... I can see AUGMENTING the stable with a subbie, but replacement? Perish the thought...
I just augmented my stable with an old Ford Ranger... it's really for my man-cub, but since the mileage is better than my F-150, it's not bad for DD... and I only paid $3,500 for it (always stashing cash for the real belle of the ball...)
Rudy
I was just kidding..... any car works as long as it works for you!!! Ofcourse trading a P-car for a subrauru would be a big mistake...in my opinion...but who cares about my opinion...and yes getting a subrauriau as a DD would be kind of nice...since those fuglies are SUPER fast and pretty reliable...
Wow, guys. We're in the middle of a recession and sometimes the toys have to go. Fortunately, some of us don't have that problem. Others do. What it reinforces is the notion that for most, a car is transportation first. If it's not reliable, it's not helping you get from A to B. Porsches are great cars and I think very reliable, but they are short on space for passengers and luggage. If times mandate a change, be supportive of anyone who needs to make it.
But, all things equal, there are a lot of other cars (particularly used ones) that you could trade your car against that I think would be a lot more practical AND fun than the Subaru.
My 996 has been an extremely dependable Daily driver.
Over the last 2 3/4 years, I've put 43,000 miles on it and it's been as reliable as any car I've ever owned.
I'm on my third Subaru, my second Legacy, and it's the best (non Porsche) car I've ever owned.
As far as trading a Porsche in for one; that would have to be under unhappy financial circumstances.
I have a 2006 Wrx Wagon as a family car and it's been great but I would never dare to compare this car to a Porsche....
Very good daily driver but it will just NEVER be the quality of a Porsche.
My 0.02$.
Why don't you just get a 5000$ dollar car as a beater? You can get some nice stuff for that price....
I'm probably the only guy who has ever traded a BMW in on one
:
This was taken a few minutes after a near collision with a deer in Monashee Pass, B.C., prompting my retirement from riding. Our local dealer, who was being creative, gave me a good trade in on a new Legacy Touring wagon.
It was the only RS I'll ever own.
Here is my plan so far. My dad wants a new truck, so i think we can work out a deal with the local Chevy dealer where he gets a truck and I get a Cobalt on the very cheap. Just pay cash for it, has decent mpg, and its not terribly ugly. That way I will have a practical car as a DD and for the winter, and be able to keep the Porsche.
Ok you *******, logic and reason won out. I needed a car that would traverse through all four seasons in Missouri and have some room left in the trunk. I needed a car that had some technology, some cool amber buttons i can push, paddles I can pull, things i can customize and tweak. Gadgets are a way to my heart and this car has plenty of them. Navi/DVD player, Sirious radio free for 6 months and a 650-Watt (max) Rockford-Fosgate Punch premium sound system with 9 speaker including 10-inch dual-voice coil sub woofer, digital signal processor, speed compensated volume and equalization.30GB HDD( it has freaking 30 gig hard drive in it, i have already ripped 6 cds to it, oh and if I had a iPOD Touch I could send video and audio) in Navigation w/ Music Server & Single CD/MP3/DVD Head Unit (Replaces Audio Head Unit) Plus the take to tunes very well. To be honest I cant believe how fast and usable this car is. Whether you're in normal mode using the automatic or in sport sharp using the paddles, there is always power. I bought the MR version so I do have the flappy paddle gear box, but whenever i want i can turn it off and go into normal mode. I just hope i haven't opened myself up to endless nights of Honda's revv'n me with their fart car exhaust, and their twelve tiered spoiler.
Ok so this little deceleration has two parts 1. I am no longer a Porsche owner by name only, but by heart(I kept the original crest) 2. Which one of you ******* wants my turbo twists, and how much do you think i can get for them. I can only guesstimate the have about 25000 on the rears and nothing on the fronts. So without further waiting............................my old rims...........
this is the money shot, can you tell i have drank a full bottle of cough syrup today? I see thinsg

The fact that you keep checking back here should tell you something...
It's OK, there are lots of cars out there, nothing wrong with playing with different ones. That said, though I've owned dozens of cars, seems like I keep coming back to Porsches.
I don't get the finger wag about "slush boxes" either - to each their own...plus that SST is pretty trick (it's no PDK) but regular track attendees will confirm even the lowly Tiptronics own some tracks!
I did a quick search for a great vid of SST in action
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrHUwtveax8
Drew,
I have been without my 996 for almost 11 months now (though it feels like 11 years) and they still let me hang out here.
Congrats on the new ride. Much better than my Honda.
Drew, I would potentially be interested in your rims. Do you have at least one "good" rear and one "good" front rim? I have one of each that's got some curb rash and I'd like to put together a set of good ones and a set of winter rims using your set and mine. Maybe.
Thanks. In my limited opinion its almost as fast as my Porsche, and it handles very well also. So far no complaints except the gas mileage, only about 23 mpg.
Actually that isn't a slush box (torque converter auto)
Their SST = our PDK (twin clutch automated manual)
I haven't driven an SST car, but the manual is already silly, silly fast around a road course for the money. Has every dirty trick the pros cheat with preprogrammed in, near impossible to spin, and can make a lot more power than the factory ships it with for about $500 to $1000 in software (on the previous generation, the flashes went open source, i.e. free)
Good choice, I will be interested in general reliability an drivability in the snow rain etc.
That's what I plan. I am going to buy a Cobb Tuning access port which is worth about 18% - 19% more power and some sort of cat-back exhaust. I am hoping for about 325 - 350 awhp all for about $1400.
congrats on the EVO X!!! love the car and the color... STI's and EVO's make great track cars as well... i think you will find years of enjoyment out of it...
reading this thread, i think it's really cool that p-car owners are not just "snobs", but are generally into performance autos... STI's and Evo's are track ninjas... my brother has one, and i agree that the interior and overall build seem a bit on the "cheap" side, but i've seen these cars dominate in time attack events... i only hate how loud his exhaust is... sometimes a bit to fast and furious for me, but overall i love these cars...
anyways, enjoy the car, and congrats again on the purchase...
