Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

We just replaced 6yr old PS2s on our C4 and I had no idea how bad they were until I drove on the new ones.

Can you just replace the tire or do you have to do a whole new one?

I agree with the Texan in the mountains, although I did run the Fiat a few times on forty year old XZX Michelins to and from the shops, they still had mad tread too.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All...first time Porsche owner here, a 2003 cabriolet. I was wondering how old is old for tires? I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus on the car now with mid-2011 dates. They seem "hard" to me in the corners and they certainly don't inspire confidence. Was wondering if it has something to do with their age? I'm running 35 psi upfront and 42 in the rear. Thanks.
I agree that 5 years is a good number for "old". The issue isn't tread wear at that age, it's oxidative degradation. The tires may look okay, but that doesn't mean that they are okay.
Try some new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s and you'll be happy (until you pay the bill).
Porsche considers tires past their use by date after 6 years.
The 2011 tires you have are not nearly 6 years old. However, heat cycles from use will cause the rubber to get hard.
On both of my cars I have driven front tires for around 40K miles (or around 2 years) and while at the end of 40K miles the tires have some tread left the tires are hard, nearly child plastic toy wheels hard, slick and noisy.
We just replaced 6yr old PS2s on our C4 and I had no idea how bad they were until I drove on the new ones. The rubber had obviously hardened and lost a lot of grip. I had forgotten how well this thing sticks to the road.
So 4yrs tops for me from now on.
I agree with the Texan in the mountains, although I did run the Fiat a few times on forty year old XZX Michelins to and from the shops, they still had mad tread too. I didn't like singing nearer my god to thee so I was happy when the new rubber arrived. I'm liking the Pirelli P Zero's I went all in for, they are great cornering tires just like every other set of theirs I ever had.

Tire tech is continually improving and has had a huge leap just in the last few years; tires more than 4 years old (even those DESIGNED more than 4 years ago) may still hold your car off the ground, but those old designs are obsolete. I wouldn't buy a tire right now that isn't taking advantage of the newest high silica tread compound technology.
What about the DIY spare for us C4 owners? I take it out and inflate it every few year to make sure it still holds air, but that's a lot different that a 13yr old tire with the weight of the car on it.
Can you just replace the tire or do you have to do a whole new one?
