After a passenger airbag deployment the entire dash must be replaced (at over $2K cost).
Leading evidence: 'Replace (at over $2k cost)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust can anyone provide instructions' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I've got a black/black 2002 Targa which needs to be adjusted, can anyone provide instructions on a 2002+ 996 with a glovebox?

this pic is not as clean because I was taking pics for another reason, there is mud on the pedals and overall its just dirtier, but it shows about what it looks like a year later (almost to the day - this pic was in Aug 09' the first was Aug 08'

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is this fitment of the airbag cover normal? It is close to flush at the top, but not at the bottom (where indicated in green.) To my knowledge the airbag has never been deployed.
1. Remove black cover below the RH dashboard.
2. Loosen two 13mm bolts that attach the airbag to dashboard frame.
3. Push airbag cover and thus the airbag forward ( inwards ) so that the cover is flush.
4. Tighten the bolts.
5. Attach the cover.
Done.
I had to remove my airbag temporarily when I was installing Eberspcher heater. Before that the cover was not flush at the bottom, now it is. I also was worried about my airbag being deployed, but it was made 1999.
that pic is before the seats and black mats - over a year ago....I was surprised at the pic, I have forgot how it used to look....maybe I will put it back
NAW!!!
Not sure about all Porsches but when my 08 Cayman S hit and passenger (and driver) airbag deployed the passenger airbag deployment destroyed the dash. After a passenger airbag deployment the entire dash must be replaced (at over $2K cost).
You'll have to look closely at the air bag panel to see if it is entirely separate and not connected to the dash.
If any airbag deployed the airbag controller will have a record of this. The number of deployments (up to 3 I think) are permanently recorded and can not be erased. A PPI should always check for any airbag deployment events and if possible if the airbag controller has been replaced. (After 3 deployments the controller must be replaced.)
Sincerely,
Macster.

Worked fine. Took 20 mins..
Note you also need to remove the HVAC pipe that carries air to the side vent.
Spent most of the time trying to get the stupid HVAC pipe to fit back in.
Mine kind of looks like your, Fergus. Another thing to add to the "chore" list... Along with: "build 914 engine" and "make race car 100 lbs lighter".
P.S. That's one of the reasons I like my 996 so much - it's needed such minimal work... although I should look into fixing that keyless entry.
Is the cover your are talking about the foam type black cover in the foot-well? It is held in with 3 plastic type plugs? How do you remove those plugs?
Thanks!
bumping an older thread, but can anyone tell me how to do this same procedure in an '02+ car with a glovebox?
What needs to be removed from the glovebox area to access the (2) bolts to push the cover and airbag back?
Thanks!
Bump bump.
I've got a black/black 2002 Targa which needs to be adjusted, can anyone provide instructions on a 2002+ 996 with a glovebox? I can actually see some white behind the cover and its really been bothering me...
This problem had been bothering me since I bought my 2002 996 in 2008. I thought the airbag had been deployed at one point, but am glad to find it's just a fitment issue. This community is awesome.
Fixed! One tip on my 2002 Targa, screws were slightly different than the Renntech DIY. I only had two screws on the bottom (instead of three) and two in the middle with the glove box open (not mentioned on Renntech), and three on top. Two in the middle were tough to get to with a normal torx screwdriver, but doable. Dropped glovebox out, loosened 13mm bolts on airbag and pushed it back.
^^^Didn't see your car at the Supercar Sunday meet last week. Maybe next time....A lot of nice cars and people.
On the other hand by any chance can you provide a detailed DIY for this fix as mine looks the same and as you said renntech had missed a few key points. Tnx in advance.
I think the renntech write up hit all the key steps, only difference was that I had two bolts on the sides that the write up didn't mention.
Thanks,
Chris
