It is on its second engine (replaced OCT '07) due to a catastrophic IMS failure at 37K.

On the lesser up side (aka down side), I have had the radiators changed, the air condition compressor changed, changed the indicator (have the four "arm" version) module by the steering wheel, 4 new tires fitted and the big bi-yearly service done this week (picking it up on next Saturday).

Options to replace wood trim (I've spend hours on the web trying to source a 3M kit that would have all of the replacement pieces needed in dark burl but have had limited luck); thoughts on replacement shock options, and quieting suspension creaks.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys - long time rennlist lurker who recently realized a life long dream to own a 911. I purchased a local 2003 C4S 6 speed in what I believe is a fairly rare Dark Teal Metallic with full leather interior and Porsche sport exhaust--purchase price was $20K--which I believe is a bit under market, however, I fully realize any possible savings on the front end will be put towards getting the car fully sorted or will be a down payment on a major surprise or two. Car has 128K miles and came with full records. PO used it as a daily driver for 6 years putting more than 80K on it. It is on its second engine (replaced OCT '07) due to a catastrophic IMS failure at 37K. Motor appears to be very strong and with the sport exhaust sounding amazing. It sailed through its PPI with the mechanic noting that the rear shocks were leaking a bit, had a slightly bent wheel, in need of new tires, is a bit creaky on bumps when cold (squeaky bushings/sway bar mounts?), and has horribly deteriorating wood trim that is splintering off in large chunks. The wheel was straightened and new Hankook Ventus mounted and all appears to be well--so far. It is due for an oil change, new plugs and preventative replacement of the water pump in the very near future--all planned as DIY activities. Appreciate any thoughts on: overall purchase; was the IMS/RMS issue addressed w/ the new Porsche engine in 2007? Options to replace wood trim (I've spend hours on the web trying to source a 3M kit that would have all of the replacement pieces needed in dark burl but have had limited luck); thoughts on replacement shock options, and quieting suspension creaks. Greatly appreciate the collective knowledge of this rennlist group and thrilled to finally be driving a car that I've admired and loved since I was a kid.

POST 2Original post

Nice buy and a great way to get into P car ownership by buying a car with some fixable issues. The engine will have the larger bearing found in the later 997.1 cars which seem to have a much lower chance of failure.

POST 3Original post

Welcome ! Gorgeous color combination, first I've seen. I'm partial to this model I have a 03 C4S black/black. I paid $27 with 70k miles. Looks like you have a few fun projects ahead. More pictures please.

POST 4Original post

Nice buy. I feel like you got a very fair price on it. Dark teal is one of my favorite shades on a 996. I would say you're pretty safe with a your 2007 replacement engine. There's a very good chance a motor from that time in 2007 would have the latest version IMS but around mid 2007 was the changeover IIRC, its been a while. I have yet to see a failure from this style of IMS with my own two eyes but others may say differently, time will certainly tell. I would feel confident enough in the new style to put my own money towards one. As for the wood trim goes I would throw it all in the trash and go for OEM Porsche replacement trim in the matching color of your interior, starting with the steering wheel. The fake wood trim they used in the 996 was awful after a few years. I'm sure a new steering wheel will be expensive but it will match your full leather interior perfectly and the OEM leather pieces should last 20 years. Then you can slowly swap parts out and eventually get rid of all the nasty wood. You can probably put off doing the rear struts for a bit if money is a bit tight after the purchase, especially if they're just leaking a bit. I've seen more than a few with leaky struts and you can't ever tell just driving around town. So i wouldn't expect a huge change in driving feel after replacing a few barely leaky struts.

POST 5Original post

Yipeeeee! another forest green machine (I am biased see below). I just did rear shocks this weekend. Not a hard job. Ask around I am sure someone has a used set for cheap or cost of shipping. What wood parts do you have? I have seen quite a few on Ebay lately. Creaking is probably bushings. Our cars are 10+ years old and the rubber gets less than flexible. Congrats..........

POST 6Original post

Must be a pretty rare color...nice you guys! 2002 Turbo - Basalt Black Metallic / 2003 Carrera 4S - Speed Yellow / 1955 356 Continental 1500 - Rust Red

POST 9Original post

Congratulations and welcome Great looking combo.

POST 11Original post

OK Tim, I have to ask. Why did you remove the fuel fill door?

POST 12Original post

HAHAHA I was wondering if anyone would notice. I am having the hard top painted and the lower rockers so they needed it to match as what was put out by the paint system was slightly too dark. Guess the car has faded a bit over the years. So they are custom matching the color.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, many thanks for the comments and feedback. Tim, love the wheels and THAT color on your cab!

POST 14Original post

Tim... 1 more question. What is the floor jack system you have under the car. Is it a low profile hydraulic system?

POST 15Original post

Congrats! Love that color combo. More interior pics when you can please

POST 16Original post

Thanks VFR! We Green Machines are few and far between. Canuck: Yes it is. The pump is mounted on the wall. Goes up about 3 feet and has been great to have for just about any repair. I got it for a killer deal many years ago on Craigslist. Guy had to move out and could not take it with him....$250 bucks and haul it away

POST 18Original post

nice color combo! I like it!! Enjoy in good health! cheers, -K

POST 19Original post

Best choice in my opinion, but I'm very biased ;-) I have had my 2002 C4S for one year and 3 months and so far I loved every single second driving the car. On the lesser up side (aka down side), I have had the radiators changed, the air condition compressor changed, changed the indicator (have the four "arm" version) module by the steering wheel, 4 new tires fitted and the big bi-yearly service done this week (picking it up on next Saturday). Was otherwise told by Porsche in Bern that the car is in amazing condition (engine and all) which made me ultra happy and I cannot wait to get it back home :-) I do take extreme good care of it and I would recommend you to do the same... A well looked after 996 is a happy 996 :-)
