This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

this is my first Porsche and i'm torn. i can probably spend $60k and get a nice low miles 04 911 turbo 6 spd or i can spend about 80k and get myself an 11 4S with PDK. Which one do you all think would hold it's value better in say 5 years. I wonder how much i could sell the turbo vs the pdk.
like many, i've always dreamed of a 911 turbo. all my friends are telling me to buy a 2nd gen cayman s instead. My goals would be to track the car maybe 1x a year but mostly use it as a sunday driver.
Thanks,
Sid
The newer car will certainly depreciate much more than the older turbo, which already took a 50% hit. The only cars going back up are 993 and earlier. The turbo will excite you more when you mash down on the long pedal.
2002 Turbo - Basalt Black Metallic / 2003 Carrera 4S - Speed Yellow / 1955 356 Continental 1500 - Rust Red
In your upper price range, you should be able to find a 2005 Turbo S, or even a 2008 or 2009 turbo with a little higher mileage.
The 2011 will be a much more updated car with modern electronics - not sure if that matters to you or not.
PDK is a personal choice. Some people really like it and some people prefer a manual.
imo 60k Turbo will be worth 40k in 5 years. The 80k 4S would probably be 40k or maybe less.
60k for a 996 Turbo would to me mean the best of the best available, there are many more available out there that are in very good condition and priced a lot lower. I think you could find 997.1 Turbo's for a little more money and I think the 997.1 Turbos specially the 09 will be the most sought after of Turbos as they are the last ones with mezger engines and have 993'ish looking head lights.
Had a 996 (not a turbo) and now a 997.2
The .2 is way more refined with modern electronics and a way better looking interior and exterior. The turbo will pull like a fright train. I would choose the .2, as its plenty quick for me but you need to think about whats more important to you.
When I was shopping for my C4S, there were lots of clean, no story 03/04 turbo's in the $50's... You just need to be willing to travel to get them...
As someone else also stated, if your range is in the $60-80k, you can find 997 TT with some miles. Dont be afraid of mileage, as long as it has documented history/maintenance.
yeah i was worried about getting something high mileage without a warranty.
i've been seeing some pretty reasonably priced turbo convertible. i've heard to stay away from the tiptronics tranny but go with pdk if possible. i saw a good bit of turbo tiptronics.
how bad are the electronics? i honestly don't like the amber lights that are used in german cars. i road in my friend 911 4s 2011 and was surprised it didn't have backup sensor system but i'm guessing for what a Porsche isn't known far.
The 996 doesn't have bad electronics unless you find one with OEM Nav. It's actually quite non electronic with just bare essentials. imo even the 991 electronics is dated compared to say Telsa or even Corvette, the 997.2 doesn't impress me. Turbo's also come with full leather as standard which isn't a standard option ion 997's.
Backup sensors are an option.
The 997.2 turbo is the last turbo 911 available with a manual transmission - very appealing to some people. The switchover to PDK was 2010 for the turbos.
The Turbo tiptronic that came also on the 996 Mk2 cars (post 2002) is designed and built by Mercedes Benz for their AMG cars and built to handle ridiculous amounts of torque and hp.
It is absolutely one of the most bullet proof automatic transmissions made, and for most drivers will out race a manual transmission (of course it doesn't apply to anyone on this board with a manual)
thanks for the head's up on tiptronic. it's weird because i've heard good things about tiptronic when it comes with bmw and mercedes but my friend said in a 911 it is a slushbox. that's why i've been focusing on 6 speeds for the 02-06 turbo years.
are the cab's that bad? i see more cab turbo's for sale then coupe turbo's. now i'm reading the IMS problem. worries me a bit since i'm looking at buying a low mile one and track once a year.
i went and saw a cpo 08 with 58k turbo model today. as much as i liked the car, that many miles does scare me even if it is CPO. When is the water pump supposed to be replaced? I looked up the maintenance schedule and didn't see it.
