I am asking because I checked a couple of days ago when the car was warm and level was ok, this morning before starting the car, the coolant level was lower than the minimum line.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do you guys check the coolant level while the car is warmed up or cold? Should the level on the reservoir be the same on cold & warm? I am asking because I checked a couple of days ago when the car was warm and level was ok, this morning before starting the car, the coolant level was lower than the minimum line. No intermix issues or smoking at all. thanks!

POST 2Original post

Per the owners manual - "When the engine is cold and the car is level the fluid level must lie between the Min. and Max markings." It is called an expansion tank (where you check the level) for a reason. Coolant expands when hot. Never open the the lid of the expansion tank while the engine is hot. Switch the engine off and let it cool completely, then open the tank cap. Only add a mixture of antifreeze and distilled water in equal parts (50/50) and do not exceed the Max. mark.
