Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You're better off finding a local muffler shop, or auto repair shop, or better yet, a welder/metal shop - which is where I've had a lot of welding done for miscellaneous car parts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought a set of used fabspeed mufflers. I got them installed but the tips just can't seem to line up properly. They seem a bit too far recessed, and the top is (just barely) touching the bottom of the bumper cover. I did notice when I installed them that the mounting brackets appeared to be slightly bent.
I drove with it as is for a 30 minute jaunt, and the bumper did seem a bit hot... maybe 120-140F, but didn't seem too bad, but I don't really feel safe with it like that....
so, first of all, is it ok for it to be so far recessed (maybe 1" or so)? secondly, how can I adjust the muffler? I was thinking maybe to put a jack right on the back of the muffler (nearest the tire), and very carefully and slowly lift, bending the bracket back in place, and pivoting the muffler tip down... but not sure that is a good idea. Alternately, I could just cut out the 1/4" of bumper plastic that is actually touching the tip.
Any other ideas?
They are probable tips for the MK1 vehicle and yours looks like a MKII. The MKII requires a longer tip because the bumper is more profound along the bottom.
Don't keep running them like that! I had the fabspeed 996 short tips with the stock muffler and they were far enough from the bumper to be OK. I put fabspeed maxflo's on the car and lost about a half inch which resulted in this after my last track day on one side where the tip was basically flush. The other side has a " clearance and is fine.
The sides of the 996 bumper cover do not allow (at least on my car) the maxflo's to slide all the way back on the muffler mount and get the same tip exposure. I ran them for a while with no issues but I guess during the track day the cover got just hot enough to bow out and once the exhaust flow caught it it went from there.
In retrospect I probably should have had a muffler shop tweak my install on that side but I had put around 600 miles on it with no problem before the track day.
Yup, chain stores should be able to do it, although they might charge a lot more. You're better off finding a local muffler shop, or auto repair shop, or better yet, a welder/metal shop - which is where I've had a lot of welding done for miscellaneous car parts.
Try adjusting them first.
The muffler brackets, 1 long and 1 short. Loosen those up and push backward then tighten.
You can also loosen the 3 nuts on the inside of the bracket and push backward also.
You have about 1 inch of adjustment.
