Assuming the engine was replaced by a Porsche dealer, the IMSB will be of the same type as before.
Leading evidence: 'Replace assuming the engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check trim numbers' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The car ran flawlessly; I had a great time, and was reminded that it's an outstanding touring car.

I paid a few K less than that for a clean 2000 cab -- 60k miles -- with new IMS bearing, RMS, AOS, clutch, and flywheel.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So as a former 944 owner I'm looking to step it up a big notch. I have a beed on a MINT 2000. Silver/Black Leather.
Factory New Engine with 5000 Miles. IMS/RMS Issues handled at time of new factory install. Total miles are 62K on the car. Pioneer head unit with GPS. 2 Owner car. Xenon Headlights. Turbo like body trim. Garage kept, weekend driver. Soft top in excellent shape as well as the entire body, with no dings.
He's asking 27K. KBB says excellent condition value is 25K. Is the new engine and the other options worth the spread, the guy is firm.
Wanted some opinions. Looks this Sat and have to make a decision as I think it will sell FAST.
The 5000 mile factory engine does up the ante. My understanding is the factory engines came with all new accessories too. That's a few grand right there. Probably worth it. Good luck.
I assume you mean a 996, not a 966? Anyway, assuming the car checks out well, seems like a reasonable price. I've seen similar ones for more than that and for less than that. Looks like about a mid-price point to me, so fair enough.
That price seems reasonable if the car checks out. I paid a few K less than that for a clean 2000 cab -- 60k miles -- with new IMS bearing, RMS, AOS, clutch, and flywheel. The car you're looking at is better optioned than mine ... I added xenon lighting and double-DIN nav after purchase.
A couple things you might look into are: 1) clutch ... original or new? My car's clutch was shot at 60k and it needed a new flywheel as well. 2) water pump ... replaced with engine replacement? I'd assume so, but you'll want to confirm. You've probably read the various threads, but cooling is a big deal for these cars, especially MY 2000's. IMO, it's probably best to treat the water pump as a consumable with a 4 - 5 year useful life.
With a cab, take a close look at the operation of the top ... stop it 1/3 of the way, halfway, etc. There are hydraulics involved that can leak and need repair or replacement.
I don't want this to sound like these cars have a lot of problems because that's not the case at all. I think the 996 is excellent value. I took mine for the first road trip of the year last weekend ... about 700 miles. The car ran flawlessly; I had a great time, and was reminded that it's an outstanding touring car.
That said, a 2000 996 is almost 15 years old, and there are some things to watch out for. As any number of people have probably pointed out, you'll want to make any purchase offer contingent on a pre-purchase inspection.
27K is not an outrageous price if you can verify everything - the engine should carry a warranty? Make sure you get a good PPI and deduct cost of repairs from the car.
At 27K it is not a steal and don't be pressured. That is the biggest mistake in buying a car. Andi if you are willing to spend 27K on a 996 your options are almost limitless.
Assuming the engine was replaced by a Porsche dealer, the IMSB will be of the same type as before. In other words, it may still exhibit the same failure modes that we've all read about. Therefore, the standard PPI of verifying the oil filter and oil change regimen as well as checking the trim numbers with a tester apply.
Pulled the trigger this saturday. Photo of the 4thchild in the Avatar! Posting real photos is blocked for me for some reason. Car is immaculate, very well cared for! New engine has 5K and the clutch and flywheel were done at the same time. Top down weather this weekend made it all the more fun. Took her out on the back roads with my boys and they freaked when I opened her up. Thank god they don't drive for a few more years.
Welcome and congrats on your new toy. Great cars, lots of fun but DO stay on top of the maintenance items and you'll enjoy it trouble free for a long time.
Thanks all. Been researching some mods here and since the engine etc appears to be in excellent shape I'm gonna focus on the interior until otherwise needed. Looking to add home link to the empty three on the left of the Nav along with the cycle thru for the computer, new seats considering two tone interior or upgrade the black seats. Definitely need to update the center console, needs to be refinished.
Super nice, looks like a brand new car... I also love my MY-00 Cab, enjoy! For interior Mods, you can do a few things like upgrade the shifter to std 997 or even better 997-SSK then paint your center console while it's out of the car. I also added OEM Alum gauge rings, Alum pedals and get the one-button-open-top module while still moving, you will like that last one. Also if you want to fill those blank switch you can install the rear spoiler switch, Cooling Mods and add-in a garage opener control. Great looking car, congrats! Cheers,
Shifter is carbon fiber! Center console is in good shape but I could do a refresh on it. Where did you get your gauge rings? Pedals upgrade, check. Garage door opener mod done, just need to install it... does that plastic housing that holds the button just pop off? Don't want to break it.
Thanks
VERY nice car, 4thchild!!!
How bizarre, that 2fast2furious a-hole posting in your thread. That should earn a ban in my opinion.
Anyway, congrats on the addition! Funny, you went from a 944 to a 996. I have a 996 and want a 944. I'm looking at a 944 turbo (okay, 951) now.
4thchild,
I got the Alum gauge rings from Bumperplugs (Rennlist site sponsor) but I'm sure you could find them at other online places too. As for the switches, they just pop out from behind using a small flat screwdriver. Re there shifter I did not mean the **** itself but more about the shifting assembly beneath it. To change it you have to remove the ****, ashtray and basically the whole center console itself. That's why I mentioned about painting it matching the exterior color while it's outside the car. That will transform your interior look and your shifting action will be more sharp and accurate with a 997 shifter or SSK. Cheers
Thanks, I do love that look with the side skirts and rear number. From an angle the front looks sad though. Looks like the front end is missing something.
