Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys and gals, I'm starting my spring maintenance on my 2002 996 C2. Just started by replacing my ignition switch that was acting up. Symptoms were as following: - When turning the ignition to start the car, the key would stick full right twist, and would not return to it's proper "running" position. This had for effects: lights would not turn on, wipers would not work (front and rear) heated seats would not function and some other odd items would not work. - Steering wheel lock would not "pop" with the characteristic 'ping' sound unless I turned the key (with a certain amount of insisting) to the far left and the swiftly pulled it out. I would have to twist the key right to start the car and then twist it back a 1/4 turn to it's "running" position I followed the tutorials found in these places that were perfect (reading both gives more insight to the steps involved) http://www.gagme.com/greg/996/igniti...ignition12.jpg and here http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutor...with-pictures/ They are both great right ups and don't need to repeat what they have said. The piece number is: 4A0-905-849-B-M56 (NON late style lock assembly) as mine was original. Took me 30 minutes and 30$ to replace. The car feels brand new again Just a quick post to say it's just as easy as it sounds and probably saved me 300-500$ at and indy or a PC. (The PC wanted me to replace the whole lock assembly telling me that the barrel was shot.. haha) So put your gloves on, grab your tools and get going on spring maintenance! more to come soon... Miles
