Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Since neither is foolproof, the dual-row designation is something that us '99 owners crow about before giving in and getting the damn thing replaced anyway.

I will be using the car as a weekend/PCA DE toy and am in the process of a true sorting (pulling apart nearly everything and cleaning/sorting it all out).

I had the car checked out and aside from the Radiators being FULL of crap and two broken bolts on the headers (not leaking...yet) it's got a clean bill of health.

No need to disconnect only the bolts and lift away and then you can clean the crap from

That picture has convinced me to pull my front bumper and clean my rads.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Everyone,
First time Porsche owner here. Recently found a 99' 996 6-speed for a heck of a deal. 67k. Ocean Blue on Space Grey. Dual Row IMS Bearing. Lots of service history. Owned by a doctor in Columbia, SC.
I had the car checked out and aside from the Radiators being FULL of crap and two broken bolts on the headers (not leaking...yet) it's got a clean bill of health. I will be using the car as a weekend/PCA DE toy and am in the process of a true sorting (pulling apart nearly everything and cleaning/sorting it all out).
Some of my short term projects are:
-Replacing all the coolant hoses
-Replacing the water pump-Metal Impeller
-Fuel Filter and Plugs
-Leatherique
-All Fluids
I have owned a bunch of different cars (Rx7's, Mustangs, GTI's, etc.) and have always shyed away from the 911 due to cost..Now with great resources like this website and all the great videos on YouTube, I have finally taken the plunge.
Any suggestions about further trouble areas I should be concerned with?
Thanks in Advance for all your replies..
Ken
Some cars, including '99's, have a dual-row IMS bearing, instead of the more-maligned single-row bearing. Since neither is foolproof, the dual-row designation is something that us '99 owners crow about before giving in and getting the damn thing replaced anyway.
Does anybody else but me question the OP's short term project of installing a metal impeller water pump??
If the WP bearing collapses, the impeller will scour its way through the block quick smart - I think I would rather have the genuine Porsche plastic WP and change it every 4-5 years with the coolant change.
Don't forget to remove the radiator. Unscrew, slide to one side and lift away. No need to disconnect only the bolts and lift away and then you can clean the crap from
between
the rad and the condenser. You will find crap between them. My 99 has 69,000 miles on her. You might consider putting mesh guards over the air scoops and no need to look at the rads again for crap. Change serpentine belt as well. When it off, spin all pully's for test. Check brake pads & rotors, cabin and air filter, Engine mounts. Plugs, sleeves and coils if needed. I removed the mufflers for that job. All simple enough DIY jobs. You can re route the front hood release cable now you have the front off so it comes out next to the outside air temp sensor if you think that is necessary. BTW the double row bearing is supposed to be more robust than the single one. Who knows? Or cares for that matter. I have not, or do I intend to, change the original water pump. I keep an eye on my temp gauge, but other posters on this board do not agree with me on that score. Have fun.
Check your blue coolant tank cap, if the last 2 digits are 00 or 01 replace it with a new one. I recently bought a 99 as well and the original cap was causing me to lose coolant. Everything I've read says stay away from anything but the OEM water pump as well. If the bearing fails in a metal bladed pump and you score the block surface you're screwed.
Congrats! Ocean Blue is a great color. Sounds like you're off to a good start already with the projects, the 996 is really a pretty easy car to wrench on.
Ken congratulations and welcome to rennlist
It looks like you got a beaut. I've put together a cart with you with a few items you were looking at, for more information

Thanks for all the Welcomes! Already have gotten a lot of the maintenance done on the car..Along with a set of Fisters...Now I need brakes, wheels, and tires to head out to Roebling for an upcoming PCA DE...
Thanks again!
