I checked today and can confirm that when the fan comes on, the rpm dips a bit but then recovers and stays at around 700rpm (measured by OBDII scanners, at least 4 samples /second).
Leading evidence: 'Check today and can confirm' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil pressure next time' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have installed a switch to control the high-speed fans and each time I turn them on, I do hear and feel them and there is a voltage drop from the battery gauge from the extra load but not sure about the oil gauge drop.

But in warmer weather the oil pressure drops a bit to just over 1.5 bar as the engine is running hotter.)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I can always tell when radiator fans kick on as I see oil pressure on the dash at idle drop from 1.4 down to 1.2. Is this common with others or do I need to start chasing a dirty ground somewhere.
Thanks Brian.
What engine oil do you use? 1.2-1.4 bar sounds quite low. I think you want 1.5 bar or higher at idle fully warmed up. I can feel my coolant fans kicking in too (the noise is hard to miss) but I never pay attention to any oil pressure change. I will look next time.
I use 5w 40. I average 1.4 to 1.5 till fans kick on. At over 3500 rims with fans off I get easy 4.5 bars. With fans off more like 4.2. There is definitely a direct correlation.
I have installed a switch to control the high-speed fans and each time I turn them on, I do hear and feel them and there is a voltage drop from the battery gauge from the extra load but not sure about the oil gauge drop. I have to check it next time I take the car out, probably this weekend. Cheers,
The fan is on when the engine coolant is hot so oil is hot as well. Hotter oil means lower pressure for sure. So maybe the correlation is between the oil temp and pressure and not related to the fan.
Are you thinking the fan draws higher current than it should, which loads up the alternator and slows down the engine? What's your volt gauge reading and idle speed when the fan is ON?
The oil pressure gage in my 996 (Turbo) is a pretty crude instrument. 1.4 vs. 1.2 is a guess given the hash marks are 1/2 bar apart and one is really guessing regarding "tenths" of a bar difference.
The word I've always been told is hot idle oil pressure is ok as long as the oil pressure warning light stays off. Thus 1.4 bar vs. 1.2 bar is nothing to worry about.
(I have found that ambient temperature plays a role. For instance in colder weather the oil pressure hovers just under 2 bar even when the engine is up to temperature and has been for some time. But in warmer weather the oil pressure drops a bit to just over 1.5 bar as the engine is running hotter.)
If the fans coming on cause a momentary drop in oil pressure it is probably due to the extra electrical load momentarily slowing the engine.
While my 02 Boxster doesn't have an oil pressure gage I do notice the engine does react when the fans come on. The fans could be drawing a bit more current than normal. I have not bothered to have the tech check this as the engine's reaction is not that severe or worrisome.
I should practice what I preach, or am about to preach, but there could be a ground issue. Techs I talk to tell me that just loosening the fastener that holds the ground lead to the chassis/body then tightening it can help. I have yet to try this though.
Interesting that the premise is one of voltage or grounding issue, but the primary gauge being discussed is oil pressure. Measuring amperage draw or voltage swings on the fans would be much more fruitful in a diagnosis.
I checked today and can confirm that when the fan comes on, the rpm dips a bit but then recovers and stays at around 700rpm (measured by OBDII scanners, at least 4 samples /second). My oil pressure gauage was at 1.5 bar with very little fluctuation at most down to 1.4bar if that.
For your reference, my two fans together draw about 12A at low speed and about 19A at high speed.
