Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2004 C2 - Took my car out today and started down my street but when I tried to shift from 2nd to 3rd it felt like there was not engagement or "slot" to shift into. I stopped the car and tried other gears but I couldn't get it to shift into any gear except 2nd. In 2nd your could feel it find it's way into the gate but the rest of the gear positions just felt l.ike slop. I decided to turn around and put it back into the garage to look at it. I was on a narrow street so I had to start the turn in second and then push the car backwards to complete the turn. I started off in second back down the street and decided to try shifting again. Lo and behold everything worked again. I drove it for the rest of the afternoon without problem. The only other thing that I did when it wasn't shifting was that I plugged the electrical connection that goes to the vacuum box (picture attached, its the orange electrical plug that connects to the gray box). I had disconnected that connection yesterday after reading another posting about that being an easy way to stop my PSE from going into mute mode between 25 and 40. When I plugged it back in (I can't imagine there is a relationship but I was desperate), it still wouldn't shift into any gear but second. Is there any electrical component to the shifting mechanism or is it all mechanical? Any ideas on what happened? Since I mentioned the PSE, I had actually tried taking off the relay panel so that I could snip the gray/pink wire that goes to the spedo that puts the PSE in silent mode at that speed range. I took of the 10 mm nut holding the right side (which I promptly dropped the nut and lost is somewhere below) but I can't find what holds the left side. For those of you familiar with what I'm talking about, can you provide me detail on how to get that panel loose so that I can get to the wires? While I'm at loading pictures, I also took a pic of my fabspeend air intake that I put on a month ago (unrelated but I know this has been discussed several times on this site). Love the look and sound!

POST 2Original post

Look under the car where the shift cables secure into a bracket on the side of the transmission. If the come loose these you can have this issue.

POST 3Original post

Check the cable clips on the side of the transmission. (rear clips) They can loosen enough to let the cable housing move and "cross up" the gear selector. Some folks end up wire tying them to prevent this from happening. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ing-clips.html

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. I will look at this clip. I guess maybe it's possilbe that it might have slipped out of place for a while and then somehow realigned itself.

POST 5Original post

That happens, one will eventually slip completely out and then you have to fix it.
