And the 3rd inspected the car, smogged tested it (and it passed way in line with CA standards BTW).

1) Used cats from MkII 996 (MkI cats have diff postcat sensor location)

I am presented with the option of replacing the left side with OEM parts or going aftermarket and upgrading and doing both?

The first place, which I used a number of times in the past, looked under the car, checked the CA approved exhaust systems book (for California Air Research Board (CARB) certified systems) and told me he would have to fail me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So long story short, Sunday drive in the 04 C4S Cab and I threw a check engine light - off to the trusted indy - left cat going bad. I am presented with the option of replacing the left side with OEM parts or going aftermarket and upgrading and doing both?
Anyone have any recommendations here?
I'm going through the same now. Your options are as follows:
1) Used cats from MkII 996 (MkI cats have diff postcat sensor location)
2) Used cats from 997.1 (need some mod)
3) Stock cat $1,700 per side
4) 200 cell sport cats from Fabspeed, Dansk, etc. (should pass tailpipe test but may fail visual depending on how straight the shop is)
5) Carnewal 200 cell sport cat insert inside your stock cats (done as a pair. Looks no diff than the stock cats ~$1,200 per pair with shipping both ways included)

6) Latest CARB approved direct fit

I went with Carnewal and I'm waiting for my cats to come back. Plan to write a review of it once I got them installed.
I am running 200 cell Cargraphic cats (well the entire exhaust system) on my car, which I really like. I had a problem this past summer when I took the car to get smogged. The first place, which I used a number of times in the past, looked under the car, checked the CA approved exhaust systems book (for California Air Research Board (CARB) certified systems) and told me he would have to fail me. I left. Found another test station, which (worked with me :-)). My car passed the smog test without any problems... CA has new test standards and the tester is required to look at the exhaust system for CARB equipment. I like 200 cell cats on the 996. PM me if you want to discuss..
I have heard of both success and failure stories. Obviously it's up to the shop/tech so if you can find one that will look the other way, good for you.
Just curious were you required by DMV to use the STAR stations, which have higher standards? I heard smog is big money for the shops so they won't risk their licenses by messing around.
Yes. I was required to use a STAR station. This is how screwed up CA and the system is. The 1st shop, which smogged my car two years earlier without any problems would not do it this year after laying under the car for 10 minutes and then reviewing the CA manual for what was approved CARP products and stating that it appeared that this was an aftermarket exhaust and they would have to fail me. The 2nd shop, said that it would cost me $495 because he had to go under the car and dismantle the exhaust system for inspection (because it was an exotic car). This is true statement BTW... And the 3rd inspected the car, smogged tested it (and it passed way in line with CA standards BTW).
Inconsistency is very interesting in CA..
I really appreciate the detailed replies guys. For some reason, CA added the C4s to the star list this year too. My 84 has been on it for sometime. I go to the same smog place for all my cars, I might drive over and have a conversation prior to taking the car in. My indy advises that with software updates, it will pass even at the Star stations, as long as they don't do the visual.
$160 from CA to Belgium with USPS express int'l. Took 5 biz days to get there then 10 more days to clear Belgium custom. Gert can also ship the already made sport cats to you as an exchange basis and you just mail yours in as cores.
You also need to pay €50 shipping back from Belgium to CA, which takes about 1 wk.
Gert can turn around your cats in a couple of days.
My price quote of $1,200 in my previous post has already included all shippings.
otto06,
My understanding is that CA is going to be able to detect if a vehicle has been chipped (software tuned) outside of the OEM sw (i.e., performance sw tune) through the computer plugin that they use for smog testing. They are required to fail the vehicle.
My understanding is with quality inserts (e.g., HJS200), no need to modify the s/w and your car will have no CEL, will pass the tailpipe test. If you look at how high the limits are for the tailpipe test, it's like you have to be blowing black smoke to fail it. See post #8 here for my stock emission numbers. See how far they are from the max allowed
