Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fortunate to recently acquire a well cared for '02 996 C2 coupe. Looking to make some minor mods for improved DE & autocross type duty. Immediate priorities include: - Short-shift kit - upgrade to engine mounts - Fister exhaust mod (yes I know mostly for listening pleasure) - Remove unnecessary weight like back seats ... Suspension will follow at some point when I feel like I'm driving well enough for it to make a difference... For SSK, I gather the options are B&M, upgrade to 997 shifter, or Porsche OEM SSK upgrade via Suncoast. (which claims to be a 20% improvement over stock 997) Opinions and experience with the options above? Others that should be considered as well? Thanks --

POST 2Original post

I like my 997 SSK that I got from Suncoast last year. Easy to install and I love the feel.

POST 5Original post

If I were in your shoes ( and I will be next week when I pick up a 40th AE), go for the Numeric shifter. I've driven a 997S with one and it's heaven as well as a work of art to look at All alum w precision ball bearings. Amazing. I'll be putting one in my 996 as one of my first mods.

POST 6Original post

I believe for the price of the 997 SSK, you can the numeric. I believe I seen a post from him somewhere on the board that he had a couple rebuilt units (new bearings, etc) that were demos. No plastic in this baby.

POST 7Original post

Numeric runs about $700, the 997 SSK is about $430 both new. I have seen the 997 SSK used for $250 (ebay, forum classified). Both are good parts, just depends on where you want to spend your money.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for suggestions. Will look into Numeric and the other options. Congrats "Spinout" on the 40th AE. Those are great sleds.

POST 10Original post

I scored a 997 SSK on ebay for $120 the other day for my car.

POST 11Original post

I recently bought a low mileage 2006 997 shifter for $72. After I installed it there is an amazing difference in the shifting feel. Great mod!

POST 12Original post

We offer our short shifter here for $259. It includes the billet shifter and new pivot bearings, and is installed into the stock shifter tower utilizing the stock shift ****. The reduction on a 996 is 35%, the same as the 997 shifter. They're in stock!

POST 14Original post

Anyone tried the EVOMS kit?, is it basically the same as teh GT3 SSK, ie reduced 35% with metal bushings. Can you fit this and then return to standard if required?

POST 15Original post

No because you have to destroy the factory bushings.

POST 16Original post

3 hours labor sound right from the dealer to install a 997 shift assembly?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 11284541

There's a lot of things you have to remove if you go by the books. A first time diy'er can probably do it under 2 hours being careful and taking their time. I've done 4 different ones on my car so far and I have it down to 20 min. 3 hours seemsike a stretch especially for a dealer but they are probably going by book time. If you were close, you'd only need to bring some beer and wings for the install.

POST 18Original post

I'd say you should DIY, very easy job and very rewarding when you feel the fruits of your labor. I did mine, probably took me about 2 hours.

POST 19Original post

Anyone know where you can buy the 997 shifter alignment tool?, I asked at the local Porsche dealer last week and he said it wasn't available as a separate part

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 11284952

Your dealer is mistaken... Part number 00072196191. My local dealer charged under $6 for it, and they mark everything up... Not worth paying the shipping cost, but discount Porsche parts suppliers sell it for about $3.

POST 22Original post

I have the stock 997 shifter (under $200 used) and the EvoMS SwiftShift ($100 Ebay), which is the metal coupling and metal shifter bushings. The SwiftShift extends the length of the shift lever under the console, making the shifts shorter. I also added a Rennline shift **** and Redline Goods boot, and adjusted the shift **** fairly high on the lever. I now have shorter throws with very light and smooth effort, much better than the bicep workout that most short shifters give you.
