Suggestion
A few years ago, I took my car to a local auto upholstery shop that "does convertible tops" and asked for an estimate to replace the top.

Suggestion
YOU CANNOT USE Mk2 tops with the large glass window on a Mk1 car.

I told him to go ahead and mount it as far as I know they have been using the same motor 99-2005.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What are your opinions on a new convertible top? Should I got with the plastic one for $375 or glass one for $599? Considering install will be $900 the $200 does not make that much difference but I am not convinced on either? Plastic is more of original look but glass will be more of updated look? The glass window is way smaller that the plastic.
What are your suggestions?
I went with plastic on my 2001 about 6 months ago.
I did not want the smaller window.
I just need to find a good protection coating to keep it clear now.

Fris, your glue and stitching gave way? I glued only using your instructions. I got a few years out of it and just put on the cheap ebay top. I stuck with plastic to maximize the size.
Nope. Glue and stitching (and the top) are holding up fine! 3.5 years and counting.
Not planning on replacing it yet. But, when I eventually do, I think I'll go with glass.
That picture was from before I did the
repair in 2010
.
His window didn't fail because of the plastic, it failed because of the glue. The replacements are double stitched and much more durable. Go with whichever one strikes your fancy. I'm due for a replacement because of the glue failure. I will most likely stay with plastic because it looks more like the lines of a coupe than does the much smaller glass window.
I went with the plastic Gahh. I don't like the way the glass windows look. My logic was if the original plastic lasted 10 years parked outside then now that I park in the garage it should last 15 years this time around.
Great Fris, I tried a few stitches and couldn't do it. I followed your instructions on the glue (stopped there) and it was great for two or so years. I have a new top now so all is well. Yes, the new top is stitched. I stuck with plastic.
I went with glass top since I am going after the upgraded look with 997 lights, turbo tips etc. So i figured glass would give it more modern look.
I dropped the car off at my installer yesterday and he calls me today, saying that its a glass top and he called local porsche dealership and they told him that the glass is way to heavy for the motor and it won't work properly. I told him to go ahead and mount it as far as I know they have been using the same motor 99-2005.
Has anyone heard of such thing or had problems with their roof because "the motor wasn't strong enough to power glass top?"
Mk1 Cabs have 3 choices: Factory top with plastic window, aftermarket top with plastic window, or aftermarket top with small glass window. YOU CANNOT USE Mk2 tops with the large glass window on a Mk1 car.
not sure why dealerships make such stupid remarks. if they don't know they could say so instead of making up answers that makes them deserve the stealership nickanme.
The top manufacturer said they never heard of anything this ridiculous.
Funny story. A few years ago, I took my car to a local auto upholstery shop that "does convertible tops" and asked for an estimate to replace the top. The guy looked it over and said it would be an expensive custom job. He explained that my car was an aftermarket conversion to a convertible, since "the 911 was made in a convertible version from the factory."
Needless to say, I went elsewhere.
Your dealership is RIGHT. A Mk1 car cannot accommodate an original Mk2 top with original glass. Your dealership does not fit aftermarket tops with the much smaller, tiny, thinner, lighter glass top, and nor are they obligated to know about it. They are a factory dealership that sells and installs factory parts.
While the dealer might not install aftermarket parts, one would hope they were knowledgeable enough about 10+ year old cars to know that an aftermarket exists, and to not provide customers and third-party installers with flat-out incorrect information.
They are supposed to be the experts on these cars after all.
what is the reason 2002 tops do not fit on earlier models? is it because of the fit or because of the motor hp.
I just checked parts manual.
996 561 933 00 engine -03... so same motor up to 2003.
Anyone have a recommendation for a MA or NH installer...... Need to get my top fixed or replaced, Based on comments above, guess I will go with a plastic replacement...... don't want a smaller window.
