Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well I put my short shifter last night and when reattaching my blue drivers side coupler I noticed the inner whit bushing came out easy. I put it all back together and secured the cable etc and moved it all around and it didn't seem like it would come off as it really only moves forward and backwards.
Well 1/2 way to work it slipped off. SO I was playing guess that gear the rest og the way in. And no reverse now. Thankfully i did not lose forward gears. Need to walk across to the auto parts store to get tools and remove the center console to re-attach the coupler. And ironically I have to stop by the Dealership on the way home to pick up parts for the hard top. Need to get a coupler too. I doubt they have it in stock.
I would think for a temporary stop gap I should be able to glue that whit bushing into the coupler.
Oh fun....parking lot repairs
Was this an OEM shifter upgrade? If so, you didn't need to remove the coupler. You could've just pulled up the rings at the bottom of the springs and slide the cables off. By removing the coupler, you risk it coming off as you've found out.
Actually it was a complete unit replacement. What I did WRONG was not pay attention to the way the bushing was seated. It has a small lip on one side that keeps the coupler from sliding off. I just went out and took the console out and removed the piece and realized my mistake. Flip the bushing around put the plug back in place and all is solid. Just never dealt with that before. Lesson learned.
As a future reference to others swapping out complete OEM assembly, you do not need to detach the couplers as above. Just pull down on the rings below the springs to detach cables.
I've got a 997 shifter ready to go in the car, now that it's warm enough to do some work in the garage. From what you're saying, it sounds like:
-- remove the shift ****/boot
-- remove the center console
-- disconnect the 996 shifter from the cables and remove it
-- connect the 997 shifter to the cables and bolt it down
-- remove the funky green centering gizmo
-- reinstall the console
-- reattach the shift ****/boot
-- have fun
Is that it?

This is pretty comprehensive. The only thing I would add is to be careful taking out the center console as to not scuff your eBrake and make sure your seats are all the way back and reclined when removing center console.
